Default 86 Moto 4 225 metal flakes in oil

Just bought this quad real cheap. Runs very good doesn't smoke shifts good thru all the ranges...Only thing is the clutch seems to slip in high gears, I think its the centrifugal clutch. Do the centrifugal clutches wear out that often? Also metal flakes in oil filter so looks like I'll be doing some disassembly.. Anyone here with any experience with these machines? Thanks

No different than fiber clutch plates on motorcycles. All fiber plates will eventually wear down or get oil saturated and cause slipping. Most times the metal plates can be reused. Yamaha ATV Parts 1986 MOTO-4 - YFM225S CLUTCH Diagram

I have the same quad.

From the link you posted, it appears that it's not possible to simply replace the fiber material on the centrifugal clutch. Must the entire carrier (part #5) be replaced?

Basically same as the Polaris Expedition and a lot of other models on the centrifugal clutch. Some you can just get the clutch pack, others available only as an assembly with the housing. 2000 Polaris XPEDITION 425 (A00CK42AA) Clutch | Babbitts Polaris Parts House

Thanks for the info. Does anyone think the metal flakes could be related to the clutch slipping in high range? Like the gears where the centrifugal and normal clutch run together possibly worn down?

Thanks, O.P.T.

_smf_, are the metal bits magnetic? That might narrow it down a bit... piston, clutch basket, clutch fiber; or gears, bearings, etc.

Last oil change, I found bits of aluminum in mine also. Not a lot, but a few in the bottom of the filter cavity. They were pretty fine flakes, no chunks or anything recognizable. Perhaps just little flakes of aluminum from the clutch basket and / or cent. clutch.
