piston slap

what will cause a piston slap, is it not running oil through or what, and people have said that your sendine is screwed and it will bend your rod or blow up your engine and other things and will this affect your performence or anything like that. thanks

Piston slap comes from too much clearance between the piston and cylinder. it happens over time from normal wear and it'll can happen from no oil or sand or dirt getting from not using a filter or a leaking filter. I'm still thinking about that other stuff you are talking about. please explain the second part of your question again.

"your sendine is screwed"???? DUDE ARE YOU HIGH? If so, maybe you would feel more at home on the Polaris forum.

As MudRush said, piston slap is normal wear. It is basically space between the piston and the cylinder walls. To prevent this from occuring too often, ALWAYS keep a clean air filter. The air that enters your engine is like the blood in your body, if it becomes contaminated, it can cause some serious damage. My suggestion, especially on a 2 stroke quad, is to keep 2 air filters and swap them everytime you ride; clean and oil the one you take off your bike after you ride so each time before you ride you have a clean filter to install. A good way to test for piston slap (best on a manual clutch quad) is to put your quad in about 4th gear and from a complete stop, let out the clutch and gas it a little at a time and simultaneously, allowing the engine to lug in the gear and try to pick up. If you hear a slight knocking sound it is piston slap. To get rid of this you will need to rebuild the top end, (which is periodically normal especially for a 2 stroke) by boring/honing the cylinder and buying a new piston along with rings, wristpins, and head gasket. Hope this clears things up.

why would you need to bore it out, would this be because the cylnder is messed up and scrathced and damaged and would you need to do some mild porting too. couldn't you just re-sleeve it or something like that also, i don't know, maybe its time to sell. what about the engine blowing up. ive seen blaster, (what i have) from like 88 that have the originol stock engine. mine is a 99 and i bought it used and have heard a noise since i got it but its never gotten louder or as i can tell, any worse and ive ridden it for a good 5,6 months now, thanks for the help

If it's a steady loud noise that speeds up and down with engine speed then it's something serious like a chipped or cracked piston. if it goes away when you speed up the engine then it might just be worn and has to much clearance. Did this happen all at once or did it start small and get louder as time went by?
