I have a '98 Big Bear and I'm attempting to change the oil for the first time. Unfortunately, I've found that I'm unable to get the drain plug out. I've tried, with a 19mm socket, to the point that I've begun to round the bolt head. SO, I stopped and will resume next weekend with more intel, hopefully.

I've been reading around and I've found two suggestions so far:
1. Apply heat for a couple of minutes - I have a propane torch that I could use to apply heat to the plug. Is this a good suggestion or bad?

2. Tap around the edges of the plug with a hammer to try and jar loose whatever is stuck.

I would appreciate any input on these two possible methods of attack as well as different suggestions entirely.

 

Just go to Sears,Harbor Freight and get a set of these sockets.You don't have to buy expensive Snap on tools for this. I got a cheap set at Sears on sale for about 15 bucks few year back and worth the money to have in the tool box..

I just ordered a set. Thanks a lot for your help. Do you know, will these further damage the plug or will be able to reuse it with the same sockets in the future?

 

Won't further damage an already damage bolt,just get it out for you. Best to have a new drain bolt and make sure you over tighten the new one.

Thank you for your input. Could you please elaborate on how much to "over tighten"?

 

Service manuals tell you how much torque on a drain bolt,but normally 12-15 foot pounds on most machines.
