Default 2001 Kodiak 400 4x4 Air fuel adjustment

Working on a Kodiak for my dad and I think that the previous owner has messed with the air fuel set screw. It starts and runs good but when you try to ride it bogs down and acts like it is not getting fuel. Pulled the bowl off and everything seems to be clean sprayed some cleaner just for good measure. still no difference. When you rev it up it puffs some black smoke and the plug is dirty like it is running to rich. Been looking online for proper adjustment and I have found 2.5 to 3 turns off soft set. Does this sound right? Everything seems right with the motor, oil is right and valves sound good.
Thanks for any advice

took a guess and backed screw out 2.5 turns. Also replaced the spark plug with the right NGK instead of the champion plug the other guy put in it.
Runs a lot better now, still seems a little off but I am going to run some more good gas through it and see if it cleans up.

I would also check the float level to make sure its not too high, that could cause the black smoke and running issues. Also make sure the diaphragm for the slide is in good shape, if that is not set in correctly when reassembled or has a hole in it, it will run badly when you try to accelerate.
