Default Blown muffler cause issues?

So I've been working on getting my 95 Kodiak 400 running, but it's having some issues. The muffler is all blown out and before i order a new one, will the lack of back pressure cause the engine not to run properly? It's popping, backing firing and i have felt air come of the intake tube when it stumbles. I'm going to check the valves when i get a chance. I've rebuilt the carb and have tinkering with the carb for a while. It keeps dying like it's not getting fuel. I've bent the tab for the needle on the float a few times to make sure its getting fuel.

Think there is a good chance your carb boot has a hole in it. Get it running and spray carb cleaner on the boot everywhere and even pull the carb from side to side while spraying. If the rpm's change its your boot or O-ring

the boot from the carb to the engine? If that's the one you're refining to, it's brand new and i have sprayed it looking for a leak. I just haven't moved it side to side while spraying.

When you rebuilt the carb while dismantling it did you get the washer,o-ring and spring out of the air fuel mixture screw? I have had that problem before with people telling me its a rebuilt carb and they didn't get all the parts out of it than put the new parts in it also. Not sure if that would get you popping and backfiring threw the carb or not but it would cause it to die if the screw isn't set properly to 2 turns out from lightly seated.

I would check your valves also and run a compression test on it

I dont recall the washer, but i did get the spring and o ring out. I'm checking the valve lash tonight, so I'll check for that washer as well. It has a pull starter, so i cab tell it has good compression based on my experience with all the dirt bikes i have/had.

So that boot you were referring to was the one from the carb to the engine?

I checked valve lash, spark plug gap, carb to engine boot and they all checked out fine. Checked the jet sizes and the main jet was a 120 (came in the rebuild kit), so I cleaned the original 122.5 jet and put that back in. The fuel mixture screw was missing the washer, so i put that on. As i was putting the vent tube on the carb i decided to blow in it to see if it was clear. It was clogged, so i cleared it out and jump started the quad. It runs great now, won't back fire or die. Now i just gotta get the float needle set correctly so fuel stops coming out of the drain tube.
