Default Hi all. New timberwolf

just p/u a old timberwolf super cheap. Complete looks pretty good runs really good needs carburetor. But the owner said under a load it wouldn't pull like it needed a drive shaft or something. Listening to it sounds further back like the axle or differential. Its like a gear grinding noise. Does not do it all the time but under a load like up hill are hard acceleration other than that pulls fine. Thank you for the help. David

"runs really good needs carburetor."

If it does run good why a new carb?

If there is grinding going on from the back end take it apart and inspect it. The longer you leave it the more expensive it gets. Not familiar with the Timberwoolf, but on old Big Bears etc, a rear wheel bearing would go and, if ignored, would lead to the axle shaft splines wearing out in the crownwheel, and new shafts were $450. If the diff bearings have gone, you may get away with a bearing kit, leave it and you will need a new crownwheel and pinion too, or even a new diff case.

Got out today and took a quick look at the timberwolf. What I found was there is a Lot of play at were the A frame mount like the bearings are just gone. If you push left or right on the back of the atv at the the a frame mount has about 1/4 or more shift left or right. Could this be the problem? Thank you David

Not sure what you mean by A frame, if the swinging arm bearings have gone they will need replacing, but unlikely to cause a gear grinding noise. Check the whole rear end while you have the swinging arm off to fix the bearings.

Sorry meant the swingarm. If not that what part should I be really looking hard at. Like axle shaft center splines, or the diff it self, or maybe the drive shaft. Thats all I can think of myself. Diff being the worst case. In the middle of fixing the bear tracker hopefully be done next week then I tear into this. Thank tall for all your help I couldn't fix the stuff with out yall. David

Not entirely sure how easy it is to do, but check the pinion for up and down play, you probably can get an arm down the swinging arm tube to do this, check axle shaft for play in the wheel bearings and if there is any, check the diff carrier bearings and axle shaft splines when you have the wheel bearings off. Also check for any play in the angle drive bearings from the gearbox, never known there to be any, but while you have the swinging arm off, you may as well.

Got ready to start to tear it down 1st bolt axle nut will not come off. Looks like the brakes have been dragging and have gotten extremely hot. I tried my 24" breaker bar nothing.. any other ideas? Thanks David

Heat. So rare I do Yamahas, and they were always changing rear brake types anyway, that I'm not sure of the set up, but heating the hub nut will probably destroy some seals. Get new ones if they are charred. You don't need the hubs off to change swinging arm bearings, or check for play in wheel bearings though.
