Yamaha 250 Bear Tracker 2002
#1
Just acquired a 250 Yamaha Bear Tracker. It ran flawlessly during the test drive and I got it home and it wouldn't start. Can pull start but when I hit the starter button, I get nothing. Tried all the normal checks and still nothing. I think the problem may be with the reverse handle, but I have no Idea how to adjust it. I could use some input. Thanks!!

Big question is did you start it with the electric start where you bought it? If so, it could be that you are not setting things correctly. Bike in neutral, kill switch on run, don't think you have to have the hand brake on but do it anyway. If all that is correct, you may have an intermittent starter fault. First check the battery has some life by trying headlamps and horn. Then try jumping a piece of metal across thick wires on solenoid, you will get sparks if the battery and starter is OK, and the starter should turn. If this does happen, check if the solenoid clicks when you press the start button. If not, things get a bit more difficult as most Yams have a plug for all the thin wires to solenoid, and you can't properly test those wires once the plug is disconnected from solenoid. If you are good at electrics, get the workshop manual and follow the wiring diagram, checking for the fault, if not, try a new solenoid, and if that doesn't cure it, take the bike to someone good with auto or motorcycle electrics. If solenoid does click but the starter not turn, put a test lamp between motor pos wire and earth, press start button, if lamp lights but starter doesn't turn, intermittent starter motor fault. If lamp doesn't light, faulty solenoid.

Thanks Merryman. Have tried most of this, but will check the starter and solenoid. Think they're OK but will check them to be sure. If it turns out they're OK then it's beyond me and I'm off to the mechanic.
