Hello everyone, I am currently rebuilding an engine out of a 4x4 Timberwolf. I am swapping out crankcases so had to remove the drive pinion
gear (output shaft at the back of the transmission) which was held on by a nut. The service manual says I must use a new nut when re-assembling but it’s on back order from Yamaha for an indefinite amount of time. Could I re-use the nut with Lock tite maybe?
Personally I would say yes. Most of these punched over nuts are supposed to be single use, but I always re-use them and never had one come loose. In theory, when you re-torque them, they will go back to the same position, so the bit that is punched over would need to be the same as last time, but is now chewed. In practice, the nut usually moves a little further. If it does come to the same place, I take it off again and grind a bit off, by rubbing the face which goes to the gear, on a sheet of Emery laid on a flat surface.
Good advice, thank you very much! I even tried finding a "non-Yamaha" punch nut but it seems to be a pretty unique size - M16x1.0 - and so far I've come up short. Looks like I'll be re-using the existing nut; hunting season is almost upon us and I need to get up and running again.
