Default 1985 moto 4 locked up rear end

I picked up this quad from a guy. He said he was driving it and it locked up the rear wheels then they had to drag it back to the trailer.

I thought for sure it would be the differential tore it down and that’s not it. The engine is free, so I’m guessing transmission or clutch… maybe the bearing on the back end?

It will shift down one gear and then back up to the same gear and the high low shifter will move. Can’t get it into neutral to start it.

any suggestions? I don’t want to tear into the trans unless I have to.

If you have the rear axle separated from the engine to do the diff you can tell if the problem is in the axle by turning a back hub round. Rear drum brakes have a habit of seizing if a lining comes off and jams. Can't remember if the old Moto 4 was drum or disc. Regarding the gears, try turning the engine over whilst changing gear, as either the bike or the engine needs to be moving for gears to change properly and, if you can't move the bike, you have to move the engine round. If you still can't get neutral, it probably is a gear problem, check selector mechanism in the clutch case first but it may be a case of splitting the engine to get at the gears.
