Default Kodiak 400 vin help?

Hey I’m trying to find year for my Kodiak 400 so I can order parts. From research I understand it’s the 10th digit on vin. My vin is pretty worn and only see 16 digits. By what I can see it seems to be a 2003 model. There is no sticker under seat. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Why Yamaha insist on stamping the VIN there is a mystery. On most it has rusted out within 4 years of manufacture, yours seems to have survived remarkably intact, and that tenth digit must have been badly stamped in the first place. It looks like an A but can't be, so has to be a 4 (2004). Unlikely for there to be much difference in parts used on that model from start to finish of production anyway.

Yamaha not showing 400 or kodiak listed in the:A:: years so I would say 2004 the years 2000 - 2004 basic the same just depends on what type parts your needing

Thanks for replying. That’s good to know that the years 00-04 are mostly interchangeable parts. When I order stuff I’ll make sure it’s in those year ranges. Should the first digit of the vin be (JY or A) indicating manufacturing location?

It is worth checking the on-line parts books to see if the part number you need has changed between the 1st year of production and the last. Sometimes a different part number is still interchangeable but if the numbers do differ, a bit of caution is needed.

SY is Poland so I suspect the vin has worn off and someone has re-stamped it with a made up one. I know a mechanic who does this, not for criminal purposes but, if someone needs a vin for insurance documents and the bike's is illegible, that is the only solution.
