Okay... call me stupid.. but what is the point behind nerfs? Are they just to keep your feet from hitting the ground? Is it a MX thing? I just couldn't imagine why they would be needed/wanted on a trail riding machine.
Just looking for some insight, so any info, or opinions would be GREAT.

Still learnin' about the sport.
Thanks.

Number one I got them so I can take tight turns, and so i don't get hung up on trees. The nerfs help u go around the tree. Protect u from other bikes comin in on u. If u don't want them then don't get them. Simple as that.

Calm down Tooey... I literally didn't know what they would be useful for. I wasn't saying the were stupid or anything.
It makes sense how you could use them as kind of a skid par to keep trees and people from getting between your wheels. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the info, but I could do w/o the attitude.

Well I want to ride more before I make that decision. If it looks like they would come in handy then I will pick some up. Unfortunately I only got the chance to do two short days of riding before I blew my knee out 2 weeks ago. Looks like I should be able to handle some decent riding Memorial Day weekend if I am lucky.

I Never had bought nerfs for my 1st Quad (86 250r) 2nd quad (89 zilla) 3rd quad (95 shee) 4th (94 shee),But my fifth quad was a used 99 400ex piped and jetted. It ran pretty good and it came with nerfs. It also was great in the woods and rocks wicth is where I spend most of my time. SOLD IT.
My raptor eats it alive everywhere. I know because my riding partner bought it from me. I puts nerfs on my raptor because they worked so good to pretect my feet on my 400ex.

01Raptor
skids
front bumper
11 tooth front sprocket
44 tooth rear
22" 4 ply back tires

the reason why i bought nerfs was i was riding one day and i hit a jump and my foot decided to slip off the peg on the way down and i ran over my ankle. luckily it wasn't that bad, but i got home and order a set of nerfs. it has saved me a few times from running my foot over and they are very comfortable when riding through the trails or out in the sand. i love them. they are great.

Bent my axle 3rd week out on my Raptor hook'n up on a tree. Brought my fun to a screeching halt. New axle would have cost me $200-$400 if i wasn't under warranty. installed some Graydon nerfs and they are already banged up. almost have the decal scrapped off both sides. Probably would have cost me another axle somewhere down the line. Almost tipped in the pits a couple of times. without thinking i went to put my foot down ( just a natural reaction ) Nerf bars saved me from my own stupidy. Don't know why they are not standard on sport ATV's.

Nerf bars = saftey & peace of mind
