Banshee and weird jetting
#1
Hi all,
When I looked my mais jets, they are 200 (stock), but I have a pipe (CT or something from Power Pros) and a K&N (airbox lid on).
Now, common sense (and recomendations from everywhere say I should rejet richer. Si that'd mean that when I do a plug test, they should be more white than cocoa. Dreams! Both plugs are more black than brown or white. Ths would mean I'm on the safe side (rich) of jetting, whereas I thought I'd be lean. Also, if I take off the airbox lid, it will cut out at mid/top rpm, which means it's extremely lean...does the airbox lid make such a difference?
I really don't know. I hear that with aftermarket you should run richer, but it seems already rich, with stock jets...
what's up with that?

Ok.. Im a little confused on exactly what you are asking...
Are you saying that you added parts and havent had to change the jetting? Mabe it is because while you have increased the exhaust flow with the pipes and have a k&n filter BUT have the airbox lid on, I know you are suposta re-jet but if you are not actually increasing any flow INTO the engine (cuz the airbox lid is on) if only so much air can go into the engine then it can only run so hard, you are probally right.. If that makes any sense.. lol!

The stock airbox is EXTREMELY restrictive on the intake side. You're not getting enough air into your motor to need bigger jets. Or at least thats my guess.
I would pull the airbox lid, go up 3 or 4 jet sizes (at least) and see if it doesn't run *alot* better on the top end than it does now with the lid on. I doubt you're getting enough air/fuel to run at peek performance.
If you run in wet conditions I would suggest the alba airbox lid, it's great. Allows a ton of air however keeps out dirt/water/sand like nothing else.
Also altitude makes a differnce on jetting size, how far above sea level are you?

I would try 260 or 270 mains with no air box lid. See if you can hit the powerband clean and rev out to its max. If it will not rev out, and burbles, then you are to rich. Back down till you get a good clean hi-rev, and you should be right on.
The lid makes a big difference. When I put on T5's with the lid on, it would not rev out very high at all. Took it off and it pulls and revs higher then ever.

How are you performing your sparkplug test ?? Are you doin a WOT(wide open throttle) hot kill ? You main jets only control the 3\4 to full throttle position. This throttle positon(WOT) is where you must read your plugs at.
How does the quad run when your at the 3\4 to full thottle postion? Does it pull stong or does it sputter or does it "four-stroke\bog" ?
With your mods, you sould prolly be runnin atleast.... atleast.....250s... most Banshee's require 260 mains with just pipes. Another size or 2 larger for the K&N filter on top of that....
Altitude and air temp play a big role in jetting too, please post as much info as you have.

OK, so what you guys are saying is that the airbox lid is so restrictive, any mod I do will be a waste, since there is no added flow (and no jetting required).
It make even more sense caus when I take the airbox lid off, it is extremely lean...
I'll look for waysto improve flow and not loose too much water protection...
thanks

you can leave your air box lid on and still have big hp gains with aftermarket pipes. I would recommend removing the airbox snorkle tho. If you remove your lid you will get more HP with your pipes, but it is not necessary to remove the lid. On my 'shee, I have the Toomey 2.1 airfilter system.... I have no airbox at all !! Again.... you can leave your lid on and still get some nice HP increases with aftermarket pipes. And you didnt say how you performed your spark plug test..... did you do a WOT hot kill ??

Zorro, Why don't you do what I did on the Scram. Cut off the snorkle and run a bigger diameter ABS pipe in it's place. By doubling the size of the tube and cutting out the baffles I could litterally feel the difference. It really woke my Scrambler up and still protected from the water and mud. Just imagine waht it will do on that twin-screamer!!
I still have lots of the ABS pipe in the garage...along with many different angled elbow joints and the glue. Gimme a call if you want me to drop them off to you.

Without pipes, just a k&n filter, stock airbox minus snorkle I ran 270's. Another thing to note here is that your fuel\oil mix will make your plugs LOOK like you are jetted correctly, when really you are running rich\lean with your fuel\air ratio... I would buy some jets around the 300 mark and play around from there.
