What is the proper procedure for checking the oil on the Raptor. I warm the engine at idle for about 10 to 15 minutes prior to riding, shut it off and let it sit for about 2 to 3 minutes and unscrew the dipstick. Here is where it gets tricky, when you put the dipstick back in it to take the reading, I know you do not screw it back in, but do you put it in flush with the surface or do you put it back in the hole but angle it down? It makes a difference by reading half full or on the 'E'. I would think it is in the hole and down. Any opions?

Just put it flush with the surface. It holds about 2.5 qts so if it shows on the stick, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just flush the dip stick with the oil reservior surface (like you plan on screwing the dip stick back in). Should need about 2.5 quarts to be full.

So, I am guessing by my master powerfull brain that it would be the same for checking the oil in the Grizz since it's the same motor. I screwed in the dipstick pulled it out and about fainted. Then I did a search and found this thread. Thank God I didn't drain the oil first. Thanks

When i changed the oil on my 2002 raptor the first time, it was a complete pain in the rear. I had it full and the oil would be on F. I'd turn it on 5 minutes, let it sit for maybe another 5, check it, nothing on there. Let it sit for about an hour, then it'll come back up. I just give up with it. I took it out riding the first time, i checked the oil and it was on the E at the very end of the stick. Ok so i put some oil in there to bring it up to the F. I ride it all day, then the next day i check it, its at the complete top of the stick. Again, this is a real effin pain. So i took some out, brought it down to F, and i havent bothered to look since.

My Rappy did this also and it annoyed the CRAP out of me! I never did figure out how to do it right...or maybe I was doing it right and it's Yamaha's fault?! The first time I change the oil in my YFZ I thought it would be harder (considering you have to do both the engine case and reservoir) but it worked out fine and I got it right the first time! I also hated that the Rappy doesn't have a drain plug for the reservoir (unlike the YFZ) and you have to take an oil line off the engine to drain it.

I hate having to pull off the skidplate just to get to the crank bolt, which by the way, the skidplate has terribly weak screws on them and will strip in a second. This is my first raptor i bought and its going to be the last. Im thinking of getting a different 4 stroke atv, but havent decided on which. My banshee is less maintanence!!

Weird, my raptor has a drain plug for the reservoir. Best way to check the oil on the raptor is to do it with engine running at idle with dipstick flush with reservoir. When you let it sit the oil will (equalize) drain back into the crankcase.

You shouldnt have to pull skid plate to get to drain plug. Just use a socket and extension.
