By teenage nephew has a Wolverine with a boot clamp missing. The boot itself is not damaged and there is no grease thrown about. Is it okay just to put another clamp on it and go on? Or should he get some grease and repack it to be safe? He is unsure how to proceed with this and I am a newbie with it also. I'm guessing that I have to take it all to pieces to replace the clamp, as the clamps are one piece, correct? So off with the tire/wheel, etc? or is there such a thing as a split clamp? I don't think a hose clamp will work.....Thanks to all from a newbie...on a Honda yet...

if the clamp came off, I would strongly advise taking the whole thing off and repacking the CV. The reason being, that if even a sinle grain of sand got in there, it can, over time, cause considerable wear. It's not that bad a job really. once you have your front end components unhooked from the front axle, use a prybar to pop it out of the differential. Then you can work on it on the workbench and do the job properly. It's not a bad idea to do it once & a while anyway, because most people would be surprised at how watered down their CV grease gets after even a few rides. For the most part, those CV boots aren't completely water tight.

He and his dad pulled it down yesterday, the boot was slam full of grease, it didnt leak any at all and it was clean. I talked to a couple of mechanics and they advised me that the Wolverines they work on have a hard time heeping the clamps on, and they told me, like you did, that they aren't sealed anyway. They both recommended a Tie-Rap cable tie wrapped around the boot, pulled extremely tight, would be just as good as the stock clamp. So that's what he did, it looks good and it is tighter than the steel clamp on the other side. So we'll see, we are going to ride this weekend and we will keep an eye on it. Thanx to all for the help!
