Removing automatic decompression in Raptor
#1
Had someone I highly respect tell me to perform this mod since the Raptor starts fine without it. The big reason to do it is to end some of the sudden stalls that happen in tight situations.
I am going to try it but I wondered if others have tried it or heard about it?

Is this an internal device or external? I can't see anything on the outside of the motor to disconnect. Seems like it would be hard on your starter motor, maybe not. I know on my 98 honda 4trax if the battery goes dead there is a lever to open the exhaust valves so its easier to start.

I don't really get why it would prevent stalling...the decompressor is only activated when the starter is activated...
How does it prevent stalling (the f*cking 4 stroke reaction when you stomp the gas at near idle rpm...)

The raptors auto decompresser is built into the cam, it is controlled by rpm (centrifical force),under 700 rpm there is a pin that protrudes from the cam and opens a valve, after 700 rpm that pin retracts and operates normally...as for the need for it that is a good question...i will look into that..

It makes sense then because I don't know about you guys but sometimes I drop well below 1,500 RPMs. This generally happens when landing off a jump/ledge at the top of a steep hill that requires an immediate slow down to turn. If you don't get the clutch pulled in quick enough, the engine RPMs drop quickly and you stall.
I am going to do the mod early week and test. If I like it, I will leave it changed; otherwise, I will put the pin back. Looking at the diagram in the service manual, this seems to be an easy mod. In any case I will post the results of my testing.

Hmmm,
Interesting, I went over the bars a few weeks ago when the engine stalled as I was going through some very technical rock crawling. Once it dies and you hit against the compression stroke without the engine firing, you stop dead instantly...

I would be really interested to see if this works, I have had very many situations when I have come on some steep drop offs or jumps when my RPMs were low and the bike would stall causing me to lurch forward.
I couldnt understand why it does this, and if there is a fix for this I would really like to know.
