I just purchased a new Kodiak over the weekend. It was an Impulse buy, i had actually went to the motorcycle shop to trade my KTM 300 Exc in on a new 300 EXC, and ended up coming home with a Kodiak and keeping my 1 year old EXC.
I, at one ime Had a Polaris, so for a utility oriented ATV I really ENjoy the Auta tranny. But the Polaris was a 96 Model I had bought brand new to do things around the house, and a little play riding. Boy, times have changed!
These new Yamaha transmisiions are way above and beyond my old Polaris as far as engagement and engine braking. The yamaha is much more comftorable and solid feeling, and everything works well as designed. I Do, however Hate that stupid limited slip front end, which will be remedied soon enough with a locker. Once your used to having both wheels pull, its hard to go back.
The bike has Decent power, not overwhelming, but good power. I DO not like the reverse, its simply geared to high in reverse, I hope they remedy this in newer models.I hope this one holds up alot better than my old Polaris, I dont ride ATVS alot, Im always on my Bikes, But this one sure feels and rides really nice.

Hey nice job on buying the Kodiak. Mine is almost 2 yrs old and it's been a quality machine and I'd buy it again. The 2000 models didn't come with a speedometer but other than that I think they're identical to the new ones. By the way-small world. Enjoy the new quad. I would buy a Kodiak all over again also. The rev limiter on the reverse needs some help though. Hey Hillhound, nice pics, looks like some pretty nice trails up there. You guys ever want to ride in Fayette Co., let me know. I have days of riding right from my house. I'm planning on being in Mo' town for the Ohio game...GO EERS!!`

Do a search regarding the rev limiter. I made a post on how to disable it sometime in the last 60 days.

Hey guys-it's wild to see some more West Virginia people posting here! I don't miss a home WVU football game and I am really looking forward to this season, what the the new coach and offense. Should be exciting and I hope they get off to a good start. Fall is my favorite time of the year. Football and hunting season around the corner plus great riding weather! Catch you all later. ktmexc,

Quick advice since you are new to the Kodiak:

Make sure the large black tube running from behind the radiator down to the lower front portion of the engine/transmission is properly installed and tightened down. Many including me have experienced this tube coming off and had the automatic transmission fill with water.

This is the only problem I have had with mine other than the water pump going out. You have an updated version of the water pump so you won't have to worry about it.

LETS GO!!! MOUNTAINEERS!!!

Graduated from WVU in 1989. Grew up just over the border in PA.

Good advice. While you're at it, check the lug nuts. I bought mine at the same dealer and some of the lug nuts were loose.
