Am I nuts for getting g/f a Raptor (her first quad)
#21
Zilla...
Of course I'm going to start her out in a open field.. with me on the back, with the throttle turned way down. I want her to learn, not kill her self. I don't expect her to be able to ride a quad on the first day. She has clutch experience in a car, that should help. But she's going to need time to learn. I hope in time she's a wild one on it.. I'd love to see her out spanking some guys on the trail!! When I was at silver lake a couple weeks ago, a chick was the fastest quad on the beach with a bad *** banshee (I could have fallen in love with that chick). I really don't think guys give women enough credit some times.
2tall,
You are correct in the gearing, but the raptors are geared extremely tall, and the gearing is hard to get through, I want to reduce the gearing for her. I will have to limit the throttle a little more to counteract the smaller front sprocket, but the lower front tooth will help in getting through the gears.

11t is the smallest you can go... but it is safe, I've seen it done.

if you had read my post.. you'd see why it's about a yamaha... parts interchangebility, not saving money on a honda

Yep, your nuts but that is really a whole separate topic!
Get the Warrior for her if you need to stay with Yamaha. Personally, I would go with a Honda 250ex. A semi-automatic is a good way to learn. The Raptor has to be ridden hard especially with the gap between 1st and 2nd. If anything, I would agree with going to a larger front sprocket and letting her ride in 1st gear all the time. The Raptor is not a bike to be played with on hill climbs. First gear will flip the quad over in a heartbeat if you aren't a skilled rider and it will dog out in 2nd gear if you don't stay on the powerband. The added complexity of learning the clutch makes it that much scarier. Trust me when I tell you this. There is nothing worse than watching someone you care about be out of control and all you can do is watch. You will constantly try to push her so you can have fun too yet you will regret it when you get her in over her head. Get her in over her head too quick and you will have a girlfriend sitting at home on the net looking for a new boyfriend while you are out riding your two Raptors.
Not sure of your riding conditions but I would even consider the Wolverine. It a Yamaha, decent power, good clearance, semi-automatic, 4X4, sporty styling, and good for yard work.
Good luck. I wish you lived closer so you could start her out on my extra Kodiak 4X4.

If he wants to get her the Raptor and limit the throttle then He is gonna get the Raptor and limit the throttle.
If he uped the front sproket it makes it harder to ride Bcause it needs more gas to start going and the gap of 1st and 2nd will increase making it bigger if he lowers the front sproket the gap would decrease and it will be easyer to ride because it will not take as much throttle to get moving!
And he wants a YAMAHA not a HONDA!
P.S. I would put a ring on the clutch lever and put a big bowtie on it and have a card that says Will you marry me? or when she reads the card get on your knees and hold up the ring!
Well thats what I would do.

Hold the frigin boat boys... I don't wanna get married.. I just wanna RIDE.. this keeps the g/f from bitching...
I'm not stupid, the quad is going in my name, title and all. If one of us dumps the other... guess who keeps said quad? We get married, well, it was hers all along. (Notice it doesn't say stupid on my forehead)

Brad,
I just want to say good for you, I'm sure she will love her Raptor (as much as I love my 400!) - I think more girls should ride....we're naturals, you know! And yeah, my hubby had no clue what he was getting into when he said I could get a quad - I think he is really surprised at how much I LOVE riding, and I think he's proud when I am always at the head of his pack of friends! You guys will have a blast, I am sure! Good luck!!!
P.S. If she needs a chest protector, you should get her a Lady Fusion, by Accerbis - it's great for women!

Brad- Get her the raptor. Buying anything else is just wasting money, because if she likes riding you will end up buying a raptor sooner or later for her. A intelligent adult, esp. female can figure out in short order not to kick the throtle wide open. I don't buy into the start small and work your way up theory. If you do that the raptor cost 10,ooo dollars when you factor in the money lost on the others.

14mins,
exactly.... I hate the paperwork with buying a new quad too. In Ohio they have to have a title! What a pain. Get that Raptor & be done with it I'm sure she will pick it & be a safe rider.
Though if my girl reads this she might be jealous of Brads girl. "Why does she get a 660cc vibrator when I only have a 400cc vibrator !"
