Wolverine vs. Scrambler 400 & 500
#11
Why does everyone here keep saying that the wolverine is the only true sport utility quad? Is there only one true sport utility vehicle out there? Certainly not. If you ask any brand loyalist (Dodge, Chevy, Ford, etc.) they'll tell you that their brand is the only true sport utility vehicle. The same thing is going on here. Wolverine owners say the Wolverine is best, Scrambler owners say the Scrambler is best. I ride with a guy who has a 99 Wolverine, I have a '00 Explorer 400. Their is no way that the Wolverine can out tow, out pull, out accelerate, or out mud the Explorer - and he'll be the first to tell you that. The Explorer has the same basic drive setup as the Scrambler, only less horses. The Wolverine is an excellent machine and it will probably do everything you need it to do. But compare the specs first, its not apples to apples. Remember there is no perfect ATV regardless of who says what.
It all comes down to a matter of preference. Buy what you think will work best for your needs....not what some brand zealot says you should buy.

Oh the same old Wolverine Scrambler debate.
Well the machines are classified the same by the companies, but there very different machines. I own a highly modified Wolverine, and have ridden a few Scramblers. Im a Yamaha man at heart, but they are loosing ground quickly to other manufacters.
My Wolverine (after another 3k) is the fastest and funnest 4x4 I`ve ridden.
It also has a manual clutch now.
And won the Rocky Mtn. ATV Jamboree Rodeo mudbog comp. And yes there where plenty of Sramblers there, and some modified.
When it comes right down to it Polaris has put more into there quads, and there sales show it.
Now shut up and ride....LOL

This may be titled "Comments from a Brand Zealot", but sorry to say everyone is to
a greater or lesser degree, and to said charges I plea Nolo Contendre, Guilty as
charged.
I so fear the judgement of this court.
Getting back to question at hand, a near 600#
(it weighs nearly if not as much as a 99/00
Grizzly) Sport/Utility, my opinion thats a
bit much, not to bash the Xplorer 400, but
in the October 1999 4-Wheel ATV( I am not
a total mag Advocate, but they sometimes make
good references, even with the flaws I spoke
of before, they are human and no one is perfect) Shootout the 400 Xplorer was
.2(slightly) quicker then the 400 Prairie(of
course way quicker then the Kodiak),
I can recall a Shootout between the Wolverine and the 400 Prairie getting the
same results, this coensides with my personal observances, that the Wolv is
every bit as quick if not Xtreamly close to a Xplorer400, and the
Wolverine is not as Quick as the Grizzly any
Year thats a definate, it is also a quite
adqauate workhorse( 2-Stroke and Chain Drive
rear dose not sound like a hot work set-up
to me, to be honest I also have questions
about the Wolverines cooling system).
I think the Wolv's lighter weight should
also help in the mud(even w/ full skids and
A-arm covers she's still a relative lightweight), oh I forgot about the 3-wheel
drive, darn my eyes must decieve me 'cause
it sure looks like all 4 are kickin' when
I hit the Mud oh yeah if one gets in the air
then I shift my weight, 'sides if that one on the ground had power it may pull you where you 'ought not to go(seen that happin')
,but to be honest i've also seen that True 4-wd work flawlessly.
As far as the Grizzly, yeah it is a big beast
but comparitivly its not that heavy(500-600
cc utility)and with the weight distributed
like it is on the Grizzly, it is very responsive to both body english and "gas"
without being too plush and "limp".
Just my observations, and I like everyone
else is Human and flawed
No perfect ATV, and never will be
Great Day

Well boner lets see...I gotta write this stuff down someday.
.080" over bore,11:1 compression, ported head & intake, modified intake tube & air box,K&N w/skin,manual clutch w/cent. clutch removed (takes 5 lbs. off the crank) ,FST race cam w/springs & titanium retainers,Answer ATV high handle bars, alba racing seat cover,Bear Claw tires 8/12/25-12.5/12/25 on .190 alum. rims off set 2" in rear & 4" in front, also has been stripped to the frame and everything painted.
A high preformance 4X4 is a blast when you can grab some clutch and 4 wheel roost a corner.

Looked @ both R1 and R6.
Both are the Top Sportbikes(Mags and word
on the Street has R1 #2 and R6 #1)
R6 is amazing what more can I say, even
with my 305# on it, it just flat RIPS!
Handilng second to none, at an Old go-cart
track(where we let it out) my 165# cousin rides it and flat stompseverybody, and in the Backroads unless
there is a lot of Str8-away(which there normally is not) the Only one that can
keep up is my friends R-1, yes we have Raced
Hayabusas their only good at take-off and
long str8's, same with BlackBird's, 900RR's,
ZX11's and 9's, all are Great Bikes, but
only one is King
Good Day

You guys really PI$$ me off!!!!! Wolverines are great yes they are a little under power now I have a 99 but auto sucks and is for ******. polaris are heavy. yamaha is the lightest 4x4 sport and it has shocks unlike the polaris struts. Plus i know the wolv. should be a little lower in price because of the 350cc compared to the 500cc but you can make your wolverine into a 500cc and they did in one of the atv mags. its on the cover and it says """""THE FASTEST 4X4 EVER"""""" that should make you happy if you want to make yours into a 500cc it would just kill the polaris's. Plus i can guarantee you i can ride wheelies through 1st,2nd,3rd,4th gears just stock which is alot more than a auto can.
