Has anybody with a 15,000+ vin on a Raptor have a tranny go?

First, based on my past experience, if anyone has any problem with their machine while its in factory warranty period (tranny, clutch, engine, axle, shocks, whatever for whatever the reason - crash, abuse, just happened), Yamaha generally always cover the repair and give their customers the benefit of the doubt. (one of the main reason I always go back to Yamaha). So if you had a tranny problem while covered by warranty, I'm sure Yamaha paid for it. Keep in mind, having a good relationship with your dealer goes a long way even if you paid a little more up front. The dealer will bat for you.
On the manufacturing defect issue, like with anything you buy, the defect generally surface after a short period of time and usually not after several months of use. For me, the only extended warranty that I buy is on the camcorder because it includes free cleaning once a year which just in that, it will pay for it self, not to mention the chance of it malfunctioning during the 3 year coverage is almost 100%.
The reason I know that Yamaha did not change the tranny components during the `01 model year is because recently I rebuilt a heavily modified racing machine that took out a dog on third gear which the debris damaged the crankshaft and the balancer. All the parts I replaced were still under the original part numbers. When Yamaha updates a part, they usually always change the 10th digit to 1 from 0 (example: 5LP-XXXXX-01-00). This means that the part was updated and can be fitted into place of the original part. Sometimes, the part number may change on the 9th digit from 0 to 1 (example: 5LP-XXXXX-10-00). This means the part was changed because its used in next year model and doesn't really have to be an update like made stronger and usually can not fit in place of the original part without replacing other related parts as a set. In case of `02 model with ratio change in 1st~3rd, I would guess that those part numbers will be the "10" rather than "01" (5LP-XXXXX-10-00). My parts guy explained this to me and I thought I share it with you. Interesting huh?
Anyway, my wife just go home. Gotta go.
