I recently bought a 97 Banshee, I need to buy a manual, but haven't yet so I have a few questions for the banshee owners.

1)what tranny oil do you use? weight?
2)how often do you change the oil?
3)I believe the tranny holds some over
1.6 quarts.. Is this correct?
4) whats the best time to check this level? hot cold? can you add too much oil?
5)do you screw in the dip stick or not to check the level?

I changed the oil and it seems to want more than the required amount to bring it up the desired level.

Thanks
Dale

If you would read the little book that comes with it you would know. I guess that little book does not come with a piece of crap banshee like yours.
Any way, any good 20w 50(Irun Castrol) oil will work just fine. Check the oil when it is warm. Put the dip stick in the side case, do not screw it in. Put about 1.6 quarts of oil in it. Them you should be all set for the race on Sunday.

Belray is what the previous owner used, I have heard good things about that brand, I ordered some from dennis kirk to try and the belray 2 stroke mix.

I run belray 80w. its not like a gear oil for an auto. it is alot thinner. I have had good luck with it. I change it after every 4 full days of riding. Yes, you can add to much and possibly blow seals.

You are waisting your time and money with expensive synthetic gear oils. As the Yamaha manual says, 10W 30 motor oil will suffice. I use 10W 30 Valvoline Dura Blend in mine.

1.6 Qts. sounds like a little too much to me, I could be wrong though.
I have a friend that races pro. He told me one day he runs Dexron ATF in his Banshee, and his race Banshee with a Tri-Z motor in it (250cc max). I tried it in the wifes Blaster and it works great. I just change it every 4 rides and no probs, and it seems to shift a little better. The Blaster takes .75 Qts. I kinda dought the Banshee takes twice that much.
Hope this helps

I'd have to agree on the ATF. I've been running it in my Banshee for eight years. Not only does it shift better than any oil out there, it wears awesome! (If I ever split the cases again, I'll post pictures)
