My new 2001 canadian spec raptor spits and sputters off idle and takes more throttle than it should to get rolling. last night i let it warm up for a few min. idling in the driveway and noticed that the headers were glowing cherry red and the heat coming from the motor was extreme. this is rediculously lean jetting, in my opinion. i reset the mixture screws to about 2 1/2 turns and it is better, but the headers will still glow red if it idles for a while. the fan is not coming on so i guess the coolant temp is OK but goddamn this thing seems lean. can anyone suggest a better size pilot jet or any alternate carb setting before my molten steel headers set my plastic on fire and burn my quad to the ground? it smells like a foundry in the garage when i start thist thing because it gets so hot!!
Thx
ben

YES YES YES The Raptor is lean stock and Very WEAK! Go up two main sizes on both carbs and yoou shold be ready to go!Or better yet get the Dynojet kit it is by far the best thing for the Raptor the stock needles are to big in size! Every stock Rapto i have seen hear in ILL is way to lean stock, run like real crap! Skydog P.S.If you want to slide the choke over and then ride it up to 5 gear to feel the POWER!!

I second the vote for the dynojet kit. It really does make these raptors run great. You are definetly lean if the headers are getting red. I would order the dynojet kit and be done with it.

I set mine a little on the rich side, for my altitude, but should be perfect when I run a little lower. I did this because I ride quite a bit at lower altitudes and it runs good up here, but it will run better down there.

I third the vote for the Dynojet (or K&N Stage 2 kit, same thing). I got mine from Magic Racing for $70, but I read somewhere that Rocky Mountain has them for $50.

certainly vote for dynojet, but you should look for an air leak. manufacturers sell their stock bike rich not lean (rich may cause carbon deposits but lean will ruin the engine) better to err on the rich side from their standpoint. check those boots notorious for airleaks
