I'm looking for some advice on the raptor.

Raptor ran Fine for about 4 months now.

Now it bogs down, at the higher rpm's in any gear.

5th gear close to full throttle and it bogs. won't accelerate.

4th gear as I rev up can move faster than 5th???

The bike has been Awesome in every way till this past weekend.
Oil has been changed regularly, Air filter is clean.

2nd question, Is the stock tires ok for basic dune riding?
I know paddles are the way. but can I at least try my first ride on the dunes????

Thanks for any advice.

I just went and pulled out my service manual and it says

Carburetor
improper needle clip postion
improperly adjusted fuel level
clogged or loose main jet
bad fuel

or
Air filter
clogged element

I would think that it might be the main jet clogged or loose. Unless you have messed with the needle it is probably ok. Also, is the gas new or old.

Just some thoughts, might check those mains

As for dune riding on the stock tires, I have done it twice. It is fine, not near as good as paddles, but you can go most anywhere without a problem. The only problem I had was on a hill, the bike just sank in about half way up and I lost all momentum and had to turn it around on the side of a very steep hill.

This sand was so loose, when I stepped off the bike, I sank in about a 10-12 inches. Other than that, I have not had any problems. I do have some paddle tires on the way now though.

its got to be the mainjet(s) they control fuel from the 3/4-->full throttle circuit. You probably picked up a piece of crud which got stuck in the jet, take em out and blow em clean and you should be ok

I would say spend $160 and get yourself a set of paddles for your dune trip. It's not much fun if you can't go places everyone else can. You've got a beast of an engine to play with out there, and you will just be tapping it's potential if you run your stockers in the sand. Just my .02 (based on experience!!!) It might mean the difference between having an OK trip, and a really great one!

airRaptor; How's Tacoma, I was stationed at Ft. Lewis a couple of years ago. Great place!!!! Where's some good riding places there? Also, have you ridden your Raptor in Canada? Thanks.

Thanks for the response,

I think for now i'm going to keep stock tires.

As far as the High end loss of power.
It's weird, I was out yesterday night. After draining and using new gas.
It's strong on the low end. but after playing, every gear bogs down as you get to just a bit over mid throttle. and if you go near full throttle, it still has more power, but nowhere near what it was..
Hell my friends stock 400ex pulls away from me now. He was nowhere near me before. I KNOW ITS BAD NOW!!!

1st thing is I'm going to clean carb. ???
something stuck in the jets??.

If not, I hate to take it to a shop, but I may hafta.
I know very little about the mechanics, but I know a stock 400ex should not pass me like he is now. And wasn't before.

Somebody mentioned a jet kit for the raptor, How difficult is it to install. And or how difficult is it to get jetted properly?

I know that the age old question on jetting.

If it was running really good before, no need to mess with jetting. I would just pull the carb apart and clean those main jets and check everything and make sure it is all clean.

I just installed the dynojet kit a few weeks ago and it was pretty easy to do. Just follow the instructions. I used the guidelines they gave me and it is pretty much on, I jetted a little on the rich side, because I ride a lower elevations quite a bit and did not want to have to rejet everytime.

If you are going to rejet, I would use the dynojet kit.

Hope that helps

certainly a dynojet kit is a good addition if you have aftermarket exhaust/air filter combo--->not very useful if you dont. here is an easy thing to check first: there is a small vent tube that runs out from the top of your carb (between both of them) runs over the snorkle through a couple of clips in the frame above the snorkle, if it gets pinched it could cause the problem you describe, take off the seat and you should find it above the snorkle--->just make sure its not pinched. other than that its carb time: Tearing down your bike and checking your jets takes about 1hr the first time, but no big deal and should be done if you cant find the problem.
I dont know about you but for the most part I dont trust yam dealers unless absolutly necessary, they usually just dont have the experience (with exceptions of course).
hope this helps

I think that vraptor may be close!! I would check for any blockages of vent lines...My zx7r street bike used to do the same thing...But only if I removed the seat and put it back on...I found out after a bit of head scratching that I was crimping a vent line for the gas tank.
If you have made no other changes...and you find no kinked lines. Then chances are you have a small blockage in your main jet. Does the gas tank have a screen in it? Is there a chance that something got down into the tank? In effect running the carb dry for a moment while the fuel level catches back up....check that screen
