Motorcycle oil vs. automotive oil. It's all BS.

I have used automotive oil in my Honda XR185 dirtbike since new in 1979 and it is still all original and works perfectly. Maybe I've been lucky. I'm a mechanic and have questioned many knowledgeable people on this topic with various answers for years. I'ts hard to get a straight answer on oil quality and properties. i even went to an oil seminar and came away just as confused. I didn't know that "energy conserving" oil was the only one with friction modifiers that can hurt a wet clutch like some of you are saying. I'll have to check into that one some more. I didn't use automotive oil in my dirt bike to save money---it couldn't see where it would hurt anything, and like I said, it didn't on my bike. Anyway, if you have a belt-drive automatic ATV like mine, the only thing that has oil in it is the engine, so automotive oil should be just fine.
