Hey guys, I started to reply last night and had typed a full page of interesting stuff but I got disconnected and when I went to reconnect, I lost the whole thing. This really made me mad after all the time I spent so I had to back off and chill before I went off the deep end. I use MSN and they suck.

Anyway, I'm calm now so let's try this again. First, Knowalot is right about most of the 02 gear part numbers are changed. From what I've been told, the main change was the 1sr~3rd gears and reverse gear ratio. Additionally, there have been some gear dog updates but not sure on which gears.

Looking at the parts list, looks like the only parts that are same as 01 is the 5th wheel gear, counter axle, and shift forks 1 and 3 and reverse shaft. All others are new 02 parts. I was also tols that there were no mid production change so all 01s are the same and you don't have to tear it a part to count teeth to see what gears you need.

Yamaha still offers the 01 parts so when repairing 01, order 01 and for 02, order 02. By having both year parts available, this tells me that Yamaha made the update as product improvement for model year 02 and not a countermeasure to a defect in design. At least Yamaha is listening to the market and making changes to give us a better toy.

I agree with RaptorRRC, mine is now over a year old and not one problem. I've had good experience with Yammys all my life and I have become somewhat loyal to that brand but, if there was an obvious defect and Yamaha ignored it, I would be first to come unglued and bitch.

I feel for the guys who have had problems and I hope Yamaha worked with them.

The scribing marks on the bottom of all crankcases are for matching. Cases are machines as a set (surface and bore centers) so after machining, someone scribes a number set to prevent mix up.

As for the 02 chain failure, I also see that chain was changed from 01 (I don't know why, maybe vendor change). But if 02 chains are not holding up, at least go back to 01 chain and have Yamaha pay for it.

I hope this helps. Have a nice weekend, it's the riding season.
