I have a 99 Wolverine and I was wondering if anyone has or knows how to wire the light in the rear end to work like a brake light. I do a lot of trail riding and I'm always afraid some dumb @$$ is going to rear end my quad, when I have to hit the brakes hard do to an obstacle ahead.

Thanks
Justin

What you are thinking of, is no small job. You need a switch that activates when you hit your brakes. Right now, there is no electrical anything connected to your brakes, so you would have to start from scratch. Trust me, it's not worth the trouble. I've done a lot of fast riding, and stopping, in the dark, with some pretty drunk people behind me, and I have yet to get hit hard. Even if you do get hit... big deal. You bump racks. No real damage done.

A brake light can be wired to work with the brake pedal, using a motorcycle-style "pull-on" switch.

Eric Baatz rigged up a very professional brake light arrangement on his King quad; the Y2K Kawasaki Bayou features a similar arrangement (mechanical switch on rear brake linkage).

Hydraulics? A little more complex, hardware wise; nonetheless, rigging a brake light to the brake pedal linkage remains a plausible project.

We hooked up a brake light on our Yamaha atv's by much the same way TreeFarmer mentioned,we went to our local Yamaha dealer and got some of those brake switches off of some junked motorcycles,on the Yamaha atv rear light you can put an automotive style light socket and it fits right in the original spot. The bulb that we used were 1157 which are common automotive bulbs,it works ok,the only problem we have found is that the brake switches don't last long if you go in alot of mud all the time. But the way it hooks up looks like it came from the manufacturer,I hope this helps I can't explain very well.

Please e-mail me if you find the brake light part from Yamaha. What states require brake lights?

In Quebec Canada I think they passed A new law that requires all new atv's to have brake lights,I seen on the Canadien Yamaha website they have some sort of "brake light rebate" for Quebec residents only with the purchase of any new Yamaha atv.

Email me at ecbaatz@snet.net and I can send you a drawing of how I installed both brake lights and a backup light. Not that difficult and if you can find a used switch (someone told me he picked up a universal one for $7) it should only cost about $20 plu your time.
