The Raptor service manual describes the following sequence:

1) Tighten inner nut to 40 ft lbs.
2) Tighten outer nut to 140 ft lbs. while keeping inner nut from turning.
3) "Tighten back" INNER nut to 170 lbs. while keeping the outer nut from turning. Basically tighten inner nut against outer nut which effectively loosens it somewhat from up against the brake rotor hub.

Everyone that I have asked has said just tighten the crap out of the inner and use the outer as a jam nut. This is basically reverse of what yamaha intends.

What do you guys do ?? Any thoughts on this one ??

Thanks

your best bet is to get an aftermarket nut. even the 2002 raptor has a new sytle nut on it. i have a dura-blue axle with the set screw that spreads the nut to keep it from comeing loose i also use loc-tite

Fisher,

That factory procedure is correct! Only problem is that once you back lock the nuts, you will need to drill and split them to get them off. If I have a bike where the nuts are a problem, I will use that procedure; however, on the other bikes, I simply use locktite and mark the nuts with a stripe of finger nail paint (much easier to service).

Hmmm....mine did come loose (the brake rotor had play) so I tightened ther nuts per the yam instructions. Motion pro makes a nice two wrench set for this (only $35). Do you expect this is going to be an on-going battle ?

Another question - I have never had an aftermarket axle - are there similar axle nut issues with these ?

Thanks, Eric
