For about $400 you can buy 9 gears, 1 main shaft, 1 shift shaft to update your '01 gearbox into a stronger and better gear ratio '02.

Nice teaser. How about the juicy details. Yamaha parts or aftermarkets? Are the dogs reverse cut or the same? Are the parts readily available or on nationwide (worldwide?) backorder? Are there three dogs on the second gear or four? Are the parts available as a package or do they have to be individually ordered? In your opinion how do they compare to the Fortin setup: cost verses quality, obviously the forged Fortins are better, but enough better to justify the cost?

The gears have been "beefed" up and made stronger. Here are the part numbers you will need to order: (1) 5LP-17401-10-00 (main axle), (2) #5LP-17121-10-00 (2nd pinion gear), (3) #5LP-17243-10-00 (reverse gear), (4) #5LP-17241-10-00 (4th gear), (5) #5LP-17221-10-00 (2nd gear), (6) #5LP-17231-10-00 (3rd gear), (7) #5LP-17251-10-00 (5th gear), (8) #5LP-17211-10-00 (1st gear), (9) #5LP-17281-10-00 (gear drive), (10) #5LP-17141-10-00 (4th gear pinion), (11) #5LP-18512-10-00 (shift fork #2). Hope this helps you out.

Mickey, is there a web site we can reference to read more about it?
Is it from your experience that it works or is yamaha offering it as a package to replace 01 gearing?

I wonder if Yamaha or its dealers are going to help 01 owners from this point forward with gearbox problems...

KNOWSALOT,

What do you think about this post? Why would- Mickey, a very experienced engine builder, think Yamaha made the newer gears stronger?

Another Raptor wise guy huh?

What does it matter what I think about this post? It's the same as all others on here. One person states his opinion and people respond with their thoughts. I'm glad Mickey has made the swap officially successful. If for no other reason than stop reading all the whining and moaniong from you guys on whether or not it will work.

But for the record, NotuRaptor, I never stated that I thought the '02 models were not stronger than the '01s. What I said was that Yamaha stated [not me] that the groundwork for the '02 transmission was in the works since lkast spring and that gear ratios were the focus of the upgrade, and not to beef up the transmission for durability. If they lied about that, big deal, they lied. Don't jump up my @$$ for what Yamaha says.

Once again, it doesn't matter what I think. The question is,...what do you think? You are the one with an '01 Raptor. Not me.
