Hey all, I'm stumped. I put a durablue axle in my 99' wolv and just tried swapping it into my 2001, only there's is a redesigned cover on the 2001's stock axle that covers the axle seal on the left side. Furthermore, the seals are different. Is this cover removable and do i try to slide it off or is it pressed on the axle?

I want to put the stock 2001 axle in my 99 and the durablue in my 2001. Do I buy a 2001 seal and put it in the 99 and a 99 seal in my 2001? Do I buy a new sleave/cover and try to fit it on my durablue axle? I'm going to try asking the dealer and durablue, but hopefully someone has come across this already.

I will say that the update on the 2001 seal looks quite a bit better. I'm thinking they've had some problems with leaks on the previous years and decided to improve a bit.

Thanks in advance.

Later

Phil

The seal is the same size. It is a redesign. I am trying out the new design on my 99 to see if it works better right now. I have had to replace the rear bearing twice know so hopefully this seal is better. The outside cover slides inside the new seal design. I think it is called a dust cover in the part books and then you have the seal on the inside of that. I hope this helps.

Well, with a bit of a discussion with the owner of Durablue and my dealers parts dept. I figured out what I needed. The 2001 does have an updated seal. All the bearings, id / od's and axles are the same. Durablue never has installed one on the new units, they had a note to use the 99 and up seal when using the new durablue axle.

Truth is, you should use the 99 and earlier seal, if you want the old design and want to disguard the fact that Yammy has redesigned this for a reason.

What I did, and what I believe everyone should do is buy the HUB COVER, and new seal from Yamaha. I don't have the part numbers readily available, but I will post them at a later date. It took 2 days and $22.00 for the parts. A bit of an installation note, if you're going to attempt installing the hub cover on any of your prior models is to get 1 1/2 pvc pipe, chamfer the inside of the pvc hole and use the pipe to drive the hub cover on your existing, or new axle. I'll give specifics also on how far to drive it on as it is critical for a good seal.

You could use the old design, but I can assure you that once you see how the new one fits, you'll definately want it.

Anyway, good luck, and if you have any further questions, post me a note....

Phil
