Ordered my mods
#1
I have a 02 Kodiak. I ordered the k&n power kit, and a supertrapp IDS2. I know this should increase power bottom to top, but anyone know how much i'm looking at. The dealer told me I would feel a big difference, but couldn't tell me how much hp or speed. Anyone ever done anything close to their Kodiak or know anyone that has.

Well, I just did an install yesterday on 2001 Kodiak. I ordered a Monster power kit and clutch kit from Highlifter last tuesday for my 2001 Kodiak. Received it on friday. (Great service from Highlifter. No problems with order). I installed the IDS2 pipe. 8 discs. Installed the K&N filter, etc. Didn't install clutch kit yet. (Don't want to get to far from baseline at once) First I left the carb stock. Already knew the thing stock would only do about 49-50mph. Bike started fine, idled fine, revved fine. Warmed it up and run it out on the road. Didn't see a bit of gain. Topped out around 50 mph on the flat. Seemed to slow down considerably on a slight incline though. Pulled carb of next. (Note: Leave choke and throttle linkage attached to bike. Just pull it off the boots and drain the carb before removing bowl and do mods with carb attached to bike. Alot easier. Also leave all plastic (side covers, tank cover. etc off until you are sure the carb is all set. I just put the tank back on with two bolts, airbox lid and seat for testing.) Anyways, I pulled the stock main jet out #130 only to replace it with the Dynojet #130 jet. Left the stock needle in place as it was. Run the bike again in the same spot. Seemed to be a little better all over I think. A good yanks on the bars could get the front wheels about 8 - 10 inches off the ground. Pulled a bit harder from about 10mph till around 40mph and gradually topped out around 52 mph. I am not done yet. I will be trying different main jet today along with possibly changing the needle. Just simply ran out of time yesterday. I will keep ya posted. Please let me know you results also. Thanks...

O.k I have now replaced the stock needle with the one supplied in the kit and put the clip in the second from top groove. Test drove and didn't notice a difference. I then decided to go ahead and install the clutch kit. (Kit?. What a joke. About 30 cents worth of steel bushings. Come on. The makers of this kit could have at least supplied new teflon with the bushings and some grease for 70 dollars.) Anyways, the biggest seat of the pants improvement came from the 30 cent bushings(weights). It seems to let the motor wind up a little bit into a more useable rpm, mainly in the woods screwing around. May have lost about 1-2 mph on top again with clutch kit though but seems worth it. New exhaust is a little annoying to listen to. Sounds like it is gurgling under water. F.Y.I - I am still running the stock original tires.

Update---------Took the quad out this afternoon to a hill climb that is in the area. Always have to climb it in 4wd. "BIG HILL!!" Usually, The quad starts running a little low on power at the very top but this afternoon when I climbed it, about 3/4 of the way up it was pulling so much harder that it pulled the front wheels about 2 feet of the ground. No big deal, just let off for a second and got back into it. Caught me off guard though. Never had this thing power up the front wheels like this before on this particular hill. Anyways, Drove home, W.O.T and pulled the plug quick. No color. Still looked white. Possibly still a little lean. I may step it up to a #132 main jet at a later date but for now, I just removed a couple of the discs from the exhaust to fatten it up a bit till I get more time... Later. Hope this info was useful to someone...

Nice info for Kodiak riders. I put a FMF MegaMax2, Pro design filter, and K&N jet kit. Set it up like the jet kit said to do with a pipe and filter. Rode it and it seem to hit the power better. I checked th plug several times. I checked after doing long flat out runs and then again after just putting around. It is lean at high and low so I think I will go fatter on the main jet and move the clip on the needle to fatten up the low end. It does run fine but my plug was like you said. The plug was white in the inside. When it was stock it was black so I need to rejet. I think mine is a little easier on the Wolverine than you Kodiak. Less plastic body work.

Well BigTheron, I certainly don't want to sound like a know it all 'cause I am far from it (especially on Quads) but I would say yes, these mods would improve your quad also. This is based only on my knowledge of auto racing, engine building and tuning. The same principles apply to these quad motors. Anytime you can make an engine breath better and more efficent, you are going to make more power some where, whether it be high, low or mid rpm. Bang for the buck. Not that great. I dropped about $500.00 in these couple of mods. You can feel it, but it is debateable if it was worth it. I guess thats all in what you are looking for. Maybe I just have too high expectations in life. Bottom line is---- There is no replacement for displacement....
