Is the warrior the Quad for me?
#1
I'm thinking on getting a used Warrior because I want a good reliable Quad that I can Jump, but not too costley or too big. And i'm wondering if it is the ATV I need for what I will be doing with it. I would mostly be using it for climbing hills, going in mud and water 1-1 1/2 feet deep,Woods,Hunting (pulling light loads), And a small ATV/MX track. I'm looking for one around 2300 bucks or less, what year should I be looking at? And are there a couple mods I that are a must, like skid plates etc. And how much the mods. would cost?. Thanx

I feel the warrior is perfect for you. I you plan to race, it is not. It does everything well, but nothing great. If your patient, you can find one with skids at that price(1996-99). Make sure the rear bearing are good. There should be no play in rear. It is a very reliable machine and easy to work on. You can still have a good time at the track. If money or reverse were not a consideration the 400ex would be the quad to get.GOOD LUCK

Yeah, the Warrior's the quad you need for what you describe. It is a very proven, tough quad that does everything well. It'll go thru mud and water just fine; and if you want to have fun on the track, trail or on the hills, it'll deliver stellar performance. They'll top out at about 60 mph as well as having good low end torque. You can add pipes and filters and other mods to make it run stronger if you want, or it's fine stock. You MUST add skidplates though, because of the low ground clearance. I also wouldn't recommend towing anything with it. If you want to tow, get a quad with an automatic tranny/clutch. The manual clutch sport quads are not designed to tow at all.

Thanx Guys, Sounds like I just need to find a decent Warrior on my price range. So it is not good for Manual Clutch Quads to pull loads?...What about 200-250lbs? Is that still to much wieght? What is the max. rider wieght you would recommend? And that ATV/MX track is not really big, Just a couple Mild jumps and some SHORT STEEEP hills so you think the warrior will still be good? I'm 14 and i have a small walet , so thats the reason I can't get a 400ex (although I'd LOVE TO!!!!)...maybe later down the road... Thanx again!

YamahaRyder350,
You might not agree with me on this one but go to ATV connection mag at the bottom of the page, click the link and go look up the Recon test done in 1999. Sounds to me like this could be your ticket. The Recon can pull the weight you describe, jump a little, and if you have the skill almost keep up with anything in the woods. I think you could get one for the price you describe. I love my Recon and its a little racer in disguise.

May also want to add a Lakota or 250EX to your list. Don't know what an EX can tow but the Lakota can do 650lbs, plus if you get a '00 or older it'll have racks too (they are easily removed if desired). The Lakota, and EX, are auto clutch so makes it a very good hunting/fishing companion. Between the 2 I would look closer at the Lakota. It is quicker, better suspesion, higher top speed, just an over all better performer, IMHO of course(Dirt Wheels agreed as well). However it is a little on the heavy side, but I have no prob. throwing it around.

Ok, Ive gotten it down to the Yamaha Warrior, Honda Recon or 300ex, and the Kawasaki Lakota sport. Can any of you guys help compare those quads to help me decide which quad I need for the uses I will use it for? I would GREATLY appreaciate it, And it looks like all the models I listed I could find a decent used one for under 2400 bucks or so... THANX A LOT for the Info on the Quads!!! I think i'm leaning more towards the Lakota Sport Cause it is said to be an awsome Sport/Utility Quad and has a Hefty 300cc engine, Enough for me. And the reason I don't think i will get a Warrior,Recon or 300ex...
(1) It is said that the warrior is not a very good Mx/Quad track bike and that you shoudn't be Hauling or pulling heavy loads because it has a Manual clutch. And those to things i will need to do.
(2) The Recon looks and sounds like a great all-around qaud. But I don't like the Utility type of appearence it has, And also the suspention travel isn't that good so i wouldn't be able to go over anny big jumps without bottoming out.
(3) The 300ex is a Manual clutch like the warrior so you shoudn't be Hauling or pulling heavy loads because it has a Manual clutch. And I've heard the the shocks for the 300ex are quite bad...Is that true? So the things I listed the 300ex didn't have is the reason i'm not going towards the 300ex.
(4)The Lakota Sport, The reason I would like to get a lakota sport over the 3 other quads I listed is because it is a great Jumper, Great shocks and Travle, Can pull 650 lbs and is an Auto Clutch, I will be able to use it for hunting and chores around the farm and still be able to race, trail ride and go in mud and water just fine.
Do anny of you guys know anny stores or website were I can get Exaust pipes, Nerfbars, Grafics, K&N Filters ir jet kits, Grab Bars, Bumpers, and Skid plates for the Lakota? I would realy appreciate it. And what mods will I need to do in order to beat a warrior in a woods race and maybe a MX or even drag race...Thanx a lot for the help...

rockymountainatv.com for all parts. I would go with PRM for skids/bumpers and such. I'm not sure about a drag after you've piped/jetted, however the Lakota runs very good after these mods have been completed. Also, go with a 13 tooth front sprocket. The diff. between stock and these few mods is night and day. A stocker doesn't have a prayer. The Warrior may still beat you in a drag, but I couldn't imagine by much, however get them both on the trails and in tight woods and the Warrior may not be the shining star at that point. This is where the Lakota really shines. Just my .02.
