i test rode the grizz in canada rwo weeks ago and now that i think of it, i don't remember that much engine braking. Is it that strong? i know on the kawi 650 it is supposed to be real strong ond you can feel it as soon as you let of the gas.

 

I think the engine braking on the 2002 Griz is fine. sometimes you don't want the engine braking to strong,( like for instance coming over a hill and landing on your front wheels if there is to much engine braking you would go on over if you were in 4 wheel drive)But you want just enough to help slow you down. Mine is just right for me.PICS

 

It seems to very from machine to machine. Mine kicks in as soon as I let off. First time I didn't expect it. I was standing up going through whoops and ended up looking real close at the front rack.

 

This was my biggest concern with an automatic. Truth is, it hasn't been a problem for me though. Engine braking is real good, and in my opinion, you can't have enough of it. Now I don't mean for slowing down from 50 to 20, but I do mean for crawling down a massive loose hill where speed control is critical. In high range 4wd (2wd doesn't brake near as much), it seems like 2nd gear on a manual. Put it in low range and it does a real good job. Now I will admit, it has nowhere near the braking that my AC500 manual had in low range 1st, but it has plenty for any situation.

Slowing down on fire roads is very good. Not too much and not too little. Crawling down hills is very good, though nothing can compete with a manual transmission for this.
