ok people, you helped me out before and i thank-you, and now i need a bit more help. have a 2002 raptor, when placed into reverse and under load, it has no power, misses & back fires when i give a little throttle. i've only had it for a month, and is suddenly having this problem and DID NOT DO THIS BEFORE. i know when the parking brake is on it does this also. what is wrong, what is the fix, is there a way to by-pass whatever is causing this to happen, would not like to get stuck in a situation where i need reverse and have it fail on me.......thanks to all for your help.....RAPMAN.

What you have happening is the reverse Rev limiter is kicking in. If you want to bypass it check out ebay. Theres some Reverse rev limiter switches on there. They run about $20. Well wortht the money if you need alot of wheel speed in reverse. You can bypass it yourself also but then the reverse light doesnt work. the reverse limiter is a good thing in normal dry riding conditions.

Never had my rev limiter kick in while in reverse. Have always had plenty of power while in reverse. Could be the limiter is malfunctioning. Don't know that I would bypass that safty feature. You say you've only had it a month, I'd get it checked out while under warrenty. JMO

This seems to be a problem on the 02 that isn't on the 01s...

I've heard lots of 02 owners complain about it..

if you look over at b l u e t r a x x.com you'll find a way to eleminate the limiter by cutting one wire..

Yes i know what you guys are talking about here....The main reason i bought the raptor was for reverse....On my first outing with my 02' raptor i also needed to back up a hill and found reverse useless because of the rev limiter kicking in and causeing the bike 2 stall...I brought it back and the dealer told me that there was nothing they can do for me....So i spent the time following the wires and after a while i figured it out...Down by the shifter lever is a connection going into the case when you unplug it, it is no longer grounded so your rev.light will come on and so will the revlimiter..follow that wire up bye the carbs to its connection unplug it ,then unclip the wire out of the plastic connection. Make an jumper wire comming from the "-"side of the battery.tape off the unused wire with electrical tape ....I used male and female ends to kepp everything looking right...But thats up to you.I just found it easy that i could unplug what i did and put things back if i had any future problums where i would have to bring it back to the dealer..

I think the problem I have with my '02 is not the rev limiter but that it's geared too high. When i'm stuck in a ditch/crevase and have to back out I have to dump the clutch becauce there is no low end power and will just die. When I do that it just likes to spin the tires and create a rut. Is there a reverse gear that can be changed or does it use 1st or 2nd?

It is still better than having no reverse. When I get into a situation like that I always think of the people who say they don't need reverse. Good luck getting out of that if your by yourself and not mr. universe!
