I FINALY GOT IT!! couple of "new grizz" questions.
#1
i finally got my 2002 green grizzly. i can't believe that it is finaly sitting in my garage. I put 50 miles on it in three hours of riding today, so far so good. It is not as tippy as some people said it was. I know one thing, i am definately getting used to the automatic.
As far as the break in goes, do all you guys follow the proceedure in the owners manual. i always remember the dealer saying to take it easy durring the first 100 miles, than you change the oil and you are good to go. In the manual it says for the first 20 hours, that is a lot of riding. my cousin says he pays no attention to this warning and rids it hard from the time he gets it out of the box. Anyways, what do you guys think?
On that same note, my dealer said that when you are breaking it in the fastest you can go full throttle is 55-60, than once you break it in it will go 65-70, is this true? said something about the break in oil. i did notice however that it seems to accelerate better than when i first got it.

My wife and I have had our bikes a couple of weeks now.... At 200 mi and about 20 hours. To be honest with you, i would break her in like the manual says. "half throttle to 10 hrs/three quarter throttle to 20 hours" Now i wouldnt say that you shouldnt or cant peg the throttle here and there, but you do need to polish the piston/sleeve. We rode our bikes at 8 hours on a 85 mi trail ride and just made sure to VARY THE SPEED. I have always heard, break it in like you want to ride it. BUT the first 10 - 20 hours are important.
MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL!!!! The rice oil DOES burn off. I am getting ready to change the oil tomarrow in both bikes. MMcGuire (another good one for advice) has changed his oil now and has no problems, and the same for us.
As for the speed..... Well i can tell you that the engine has quieted down a little and is starting to run better as she is breaking in. I have opened it up here and there, (making sure not to overheat it) and starting top speed was around 60-63. Today, she wound out at about 69. (SAME ROAD).
I agree with you about the tippy part... NOT at all tippy. BUT i have noticed that after a small jump or a steep turn, the front end will dive a little. I am going to stiffen the suspension up tomarrow as well. I have talked to a couple of people and they say the same thing and this is a fix. We are putting 27" Dirt Devils on my bike next week when they come in and leaving my wifes stock. I like the mud more than her. Let me tell ya, if you are planning on doing some mud running.....ya might wanna change the tires. MMcGuire did circles around me while i was WINCHING my bike out. He has the ITP 27" on his. Both the Dirt Devils and the ITP's fit on the stock rims. (At least the DD's better). hehe
I will give ya an update after the new tires are on and after i get the rice oil out.
ENJOY THE NEW RIDE!!!!!

Lsnake,
Promise to let you know.... the tires are coming in on monday... (crossing fingers).
I can tell you, now that the suspension was tightened up on the front (two notches), the bike handles incredible. I got to take her out to a gravel pit close to the house and the ride was awsome!
I dont know your riding habits, but if they are like mine, i would consider stiffening the front up at least halfway.
Will let you know more as i learn more!!!

I just switched all of them today to the second hardest setting. I wanted this because i want to be able to jump with it and not hit that hard, plus i am not the lightest guy either. I just learned that you hit the gas when going off a jump to keep from doing a nose dive, works great. not maybe i will work up to the big boys (not too big though).

hey Silverbear,
i see that you added a kawi to your list, how do you like it? I asume that it is for your son? my friend has one, he things he can cream my grizz on it, I could beat him on my dads bear tracker. anyways it is a nice machine for a youngster. has some pep to it.

Yes, It is my 7 year old son's quad. I really wanted to get him a beartracker, but he just isn't big enough. The next one down was a breeze, which I am not impressed with. I then started looking at other brands, and was simply amazed at what kawi offered on the 220 Bayou...swing axle, shaft drive, front & rear racks, lights, etc. For $2999.00, same price of the breeze, but a whole lot more quad.
My son is now a born again Kawasaki man. He loves it, and it's been really great so far, and I suspect will be for a long time to come. I was also surprised at the pep that little bugger has got. All in all, a very good beginner quad.

Hey silverbear, how do you like the beartracker? I am getting the wife's family into ATV'n! I just got the bro-in-law to buy a couple. He got the 2x4 big bears for him and his wife. (best affordability). I have another one that is looking at a beartracker for the price as well. He is 5'11" and about 165 lbs. He really is a nut on a bike. I let him take the grizzly for a spin. Up and down, around and around. Looks like he likes to climb and try the "fun" stuff. Just wondering if it is enough power for him? Do they go through the mud ok? I am not talking about a soup hole....just 4-6 inches that you would run into on a trail. Mostly will be riding on hardpack and gravel pits. BUT there is always a puddle to scream through!
Thanks

well i'm not silverbear, but i have a beartracker. It does go through mud rea;;y well. If you get in the habbit of it you might want to get some diffrent tires for it. but for a little mud (4"-6"
, you should be fine. It is a great beginners quad, it was my second quad. had all the pep i needed for a while. if the 250 isn't enough I might suggest a prarie 300 4x4. they look pretty nice.
