Toomeys on a banshee. Hush or not to hush?
#1
I am ready to buy a set of toomeys for my banshee but has anyone tried getting in at the silver lake sand dunes or the mounds (WITHOUT) using the hush kit?

In answer to your question, HUSH IT. The Dunes were almost permanently closed last year due to the sound issue. The sound check thing that's new for 2002 is a compromise of sorts to keep them open. The people (voters) that are complaining to the Golden Twp. board continuely about the loud pipes from the dunes are looking for more reasons to close them. If the hush kit doesn't cost any power and may add some, it sounds like the way to go, other than the extra cash you have to put up. Remember that the voucher system is being used because of local complaints from residents, not anything from the state or the DNR.
Another dunes note: In the local paper this week the DNR is looking at contracting the sound checks out to the Oceana County Sheriff Department in case of a need to "cuff'em and stuff'em". Apparently the DNR's people do not have the authority to arrest people. Nothing's been deceided yet.

You better get the Hush kit. The Toomeys (an most others) are pretty loud. According to the Toomey site, sound level is 99 dB without Hush and 87 dB with Hush. You can also get the Hush kit with an optional USFS approved spark arrestor if you need that for about $60 more.
Anything we can do to keep our riding areas open is worth it.
