I am plannig on building a wheely bar, does anyone have any advice? Should I build a shock into it or run it straight bar? Where do you think would be good mounting spots, and how long should it be? Moose I know you have one, do you have any pictures or any do and don'ts? Figured I would get into dirt drag since there are a few places around here to do that. Last time I tried I only ran a 4 because of a bad start. A 3.2 is what I am shootting for on dirt and a 8 flat in the 1/8. Incase the #'s sound fast or something our dirt track is only 200' not 300' like most.

For some reason that is the first time I have seen it, nice. Just a few questions so I can get it right the first time. What is the plate that it hooks to on the bottom of your swingarm? Can you change the height of the wheel? How long is it? If you did it over again would you change anything about it? Thanks so much for the help.

Moose - Hate to get on Ward660's turf but have noticed you post a lot on this forum. I went to Little Sahara for the first time on the 3rd of May. Had a great time but would like to ask, is there ever a time when you can go and the sand not be rough and all torn up? The wind was strong on Sat. and Sun. but everywhere I went, it was rough. Thanks

Ward660R, I have a GYT-R swingarm guard which I bolted two 5/16" thick pices of aluminum to. The wheelie bar has a 5/16" clevices from the chassis shop which pins to them.

To change the highth of the wheel , The center tube is two pieces slid into each other with holes drilled into them for adjustment.

You'll need to tie the rear suspension down, as the suspension compresses on launch the wheelie bar pivots on the swingarm & causes the wheel to raise. The first time I launched I didn't tie the rear end down & had the wheel about 4" off the ground. When I launched the suspension compressed & the wheel went to 18" off the ground!! The front end went about 3 1/2 feet up & I thought I'd broke the bar!! A tied down rear suspension helps the quad launch better anyhow.

The length is 3 feet from skid plate to wheelie bar axle (we just guessed on the length but it works good).

The top mount is the tricky part. I made it out of 1/8" steel plate. It goes outside of the existing washers on the bolt & each side has a diffrent size hole for the bolt to pass thru. The stops in the rear are needed because You can't tighten up the bolt enough to keep the mount from moving (just use the recomended torque on it). I leave the mount on all the time.

The only thing I'd do diffrent is to put a mount on the bar for a number plate since our track us moving the tower to the side & I don't want to put my numbers on the tank.

Raptorrider2001, I've been to Sahara 3 times this year & am going back tomorow. The only time that the sand was smooth was after a strong wind the night before with dry sand. Thats the price we pay for having such a popular sport & a popular place to ride! every weekend there is almost 1000 people there & 10,000 on holidays. That really tears up the sand. If you go during the middle of the week you have the best shot at some virgin sand. When I started going in the early 70's you could go on an off weekend & be the only one there!! Can't do that any more.

You guys just ask if you have any more questions.

What do you think about this? Make a bracket that hooks to the sub frame around the grab bar with the bottom mount being where your top mount is. I thought of this for two reasons: you could use it with out having to compress the rear end; and more angle on the upper bar for more support. I also thought about putting some kind of small shock in the upper bar for a little give. I don't know how that would work this is my first go at one. Thanks again.

your idea sounds good to me.

I dont know about the shock though. It would add a lot of weight & might make your quad bounce on it & every time it bounces it would break the tires loose & when it grabs it would bounce again. I don't know for sure I'm just guessing. My wheelie bar flexes & if I'm hooking up so hard that it bounces I let all the air out of the wheel & it acts as a cushion.

This would only be good for maybe flat drag racing, but I saw one where the top mounted to the grab bar bolts and the lower went under the axle and mounted to the footpeg bolts. Looked realy good, all polished aluminum, professionaly made. He used to little roller blad looking wheels, looked like it would work great, on a smooth surface.

ward, from all the dragging i've been doing with different wheelie bars lately, the best to use are the ones that allow the use of your quads rear suspension. if you were racing on pavement then no suspension is o.k. on dirt, if you hit any kind of uneveness you'll lose traction.
i made a very simple bar that bolts into the skid plate holes in the swingarm. while this is fine, having the gyt-r skid plate would erase the chance of breaking one of the bolts off into the swingarm. but use one that will let you use your suspension. for me, they are just always faster.
where are you guys racing? i might want to come down.
