There is a thread running dealing with this same question. Look it up.

It all depends on how you ride, there are lots of 01 with tons of hours on them and no trouble. Others have failed with very little hours. Alot has to do with your ride style, use the clutch and shift smoothly you "should" be OK. Start banging hard with no clutch you could be in for a different story. To upgrade to an 02 tranny here is what you'll need

5LP-18512-10-00 FORK SHIFT 2
5LP-17401-10-00 AXLE MAIN (12T)
5LP-17121-10-00 GEAR 2ND PINION
5LP-17141-10-00 GEAR 4TH PINION
5LP-17143-10-00 GEAR REVERSE PINION
5LP-17243-10-00 GEAR REVERSEWHEEL
5LP-17241-10-00 GEAR 4TH WHEEL
5LP-17221-10-00 GEAR 2ND WHEEL
5LP-17231-10-00 GEAR 3RD WHEEL
5LP-17251-10-00 GEAR 5TH WHEEL
5LP-17211-10-00 GEAR 1ST WHEEL
5LP-17281-10-00 GEAR DRIVE 1

3YF-11351-00-00 GASKET, CYLINDER
3YF-11181-00-00 GASKET, CYLINDER HEAD

Now I'm going to to wait until mine is toast before I change anything.

Here is the difference in gear ratios. 1st gear is lower by 6%, 2nd by 9%, and 3rd by 3.7%. Reverse is also lower
