I'm sure it has been asked a million times, but what is the ideal settings for my 98 wolverine with the megamax 2, jet kit, and proflow filter.

My bike runs great!! It pulls in every gear, and starts easy. Very occasionally, on a hard decelleration, I get a "pop, pop" out of the pipe. I am showing signs of running rich. The 6 disks in my pipe are black. Dyno jet said if below 3000', install a 155 main and put the clip in slot #4 with the mixture screw 2 turns out. I have done this but I know it is not correct. Help!! I am afraid of going to lean, I'd rather not burn it up yet!! I ride this bike pretty hard. I tried adjusting the mixture screw in 1/2 turn today and took it on a 55 mile ride. The pipe is still turning really black. You would think it would run poorly, but this bike rips!! Advice would be greatly appreciated.

I live in PA, not sure about your elevation, but I am at about 700 ft above. I too have the Mega Max, and Pro Flow with a K&N, and Dyno jet kit as well as major motor mods. I run a 147.5 main, clip in second groove from top, stock pilot, and 2.5 turns out on screw. Runs perfect. Hope this helps

I run a #150 (DYNOJET)with the outer rap of the proflow removed, i also had to increase my airflow by installing another air intake, as far as the popping goes, it could be an exhaust leak.

I have a '96 with a FMF Megamaxx II Pipe, Dynojet kit, and K&N filter. My bike had all these goodies on it when I bought it, and it works great, so I never fooled around with any of the adjustments, with the exception of adding or removing discs/silencer core of the pipe. When I first got the bike, I noticed the exact same thing you are describing.... a "pop, pop" sound when decelerating, especially when gearing down and letting the engine slow the bike. What mine turned out to be was a crack in the little rubber and aluminum intake manifold that connects the carb to the head. You might want to check that out. Look for cracks, and check that your clamp is tight enough, but if you take it off, be carefull putting it back on. I learned the hard way that they break easy, and they are NOT CHEAP!.

Sounds like you are way too rich on your main jet, I would go down atleast 2 sizes. The black soot should be a dead give away. Whats happening most likely is unburned fuel is reaching your exaust and igniting on decel, I have seen this happen at high altitudes. Also you dont have to worry about burning up you bike by going a little lean, its not a 2 stroke, If you get lean you will feel it. It will lean misfire and run hot, but you will have to really try to burn it up to do any real damage, especially on a fairly stock engine.
Hope this helps...

I swapped the 155 main down to a 147.5 Dyno jet didn't include this size in it's kit but the dealer had one for a couple bucks. I also clipped into slot # 2 on the needle & 2 1/2 out on the mixture. Seems to run great. The soot is now gone. I'll give it a true test later. I ride between 700 - 3500 feet. Lot's of mountains here in Washington.

What effect exactly does that mixture screw have? Does it only adjust the idle circuit or does it impact the entire accelleration range? If I continue to soot under a load, will I need to drop another main size, or can I fine tune with the mixture screw? Gotta ask, Wanna learn!!

All that screw does is add air to the idle circuit when screwed out. Also the idle circuit is always on, so its adjustment will affect everything else, but it will slightly effect wide open throttle....Hope this helps :P
