Air filter cleaning/replacing
#1
What is the best way to clean the air filter? Do you just blow it out with air? or do you rinse in solvent? do you just wash with soap and water? Should there be oil added to it after cleaning?
When and how do you know if you should replace the filter?
Thanks

I have a parts washer so I cleaned my stock filter with solvent. Always use the proper oil for your filter type (paper or foam). It's the oil that does most of the filtering. There are also cleaners designed for foam or paper filters.
I now have a Prodesign adaptor & a K&N I use the K&N cleaning fluid & K&N filter oil.
Unless I've been in very dusty or wet conditions I clean my filter every 20 hours when I adjust the valves, change oil & filter & put in a new spark plug.
I don't mess around with matinentce with the money I've got invested in my Raptor.
With your grizz you may get into a lot more crud than I do so you might want to check it more often.
Excuse my ignorance about 4X4's but is your Grizz a 660? does it have the same filter setup as the Raptor? If so the Pro Design is the way to go.

Dish washing detergent and warm water is fine. Take a little time and clean the filter throughly with your hands.....let it set in the soapy water a few minutes and give it another good rubbing / cleaning. Rinse it off with water really good (not high pressure) and let it air dry. Next apply a generous amout of filter oil (PJ1 super tacky and Maxima Fab1 is awesome) evenly onto the inside and outside of the filter. Next, I usually get my hands around the filter and squeeze a little too make sure I have the filter throughly oiled throughout. Install and ride!
Oh yea, I would assume your filter simply sets into the airbox....make sure it's in there correct and the sealing surface is lubed good. As mentioned earlier, get a pro-flo or equivilant and be done with the pathetic set-up.

Also, I would change the filter when it showed any type of wear (usually slight tears). If you can get 10 cleanings out of the stock filter, it's definately time too replace.....better safe than sorry and stock filters are cheap. I would'nt wory about cleaning the filter again until it's visibly dirty.

Thanks guys,
Yes its a 660 engine. I dont know if it is the same setup as the Raptor or not. It is an inline filter over a screen housing. Both ends have plastic flat clips that slide into place in the air box.
It IS definately visibly dirty. After a ride yesterday, i tried to open her up and top end was only 53. I knew something wasnt right. When i opened the airbox, you could see the crud. We ride in packs down the trail systems and if you are following, then you are eating dust.
I am going to clean her up really good today and see if that is all she needed. Plus oil/filter/grease.
Next mod will be to mod the stock exhaust to see if i can get a better flow without doing a bunch of expensive mods to her.
Thanks again.
