I can personally attest to the fact that reverse is STUPIDLY fast on my 01 Raptor. I can't even believe Yamaha let this thing out the door with a 35 mph reverse gear! I'm the only guy around here with an 01, and all the 02 models seem to not only have a lower gear ratio in reverse, but there's a rev limiter also.

the 01 has HMF slip on, no lid on the airbox with proflow filter and a dynojet kit and has been dialed in on a dyno. The 02 is totally stock. The 01 will jump the 02 in a drag race then the gap stays pretty even. the modded 01 has allot more torque out of the corners. The 02 gears suit the stock engine better and it accelerates harder than a stock 01 for sure no doubt about it. I'd rate a stock 02 as half way between the stock 01 and the piped 01 in engine acceleration from a standing start. The stock 02 jetting seems way better than the stock 01 in comparision. I like the slightly longer second gear of the 01 in the sand dunes better than the 02 which runs outa speed. Flip side is to gear it up slightly and have the advantage of a few more mph on top end. I often find myself hard out on the 01 wishing for another gear..........

I'm going to swap all my 01 bits to the 02 and sell the 01 and will probably get an LTZ 400 for the wife (and my back up speed machine)the LTZ ain't far behind and have alot of HP lurking in there .......... won't have the brute torque of the Raptor but should still be on heck of ride..........

If you really want to keep your 01 tranny gear ratio's the same just upgrade to the machined 2 and 3rd gear cogs.Not cast like stock (I'm not sure who makes them) but I did read about one of the mod Raptors having this done..try FST...this will fix the tranny problems ..the only story I have ever heard of a 01 tranny breaking (rounding off the 3 cogs on second gear) is if they modify them ..I have never heard of a stock 2001 breaking the transmission [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif[/img]
