Raptor's Rough
#1
Some time ago, my Raptor started to have problems with a consistent idle. sometimes it would idle high, sometimes low. Even after it was warmed up. Now, it also spits and sputters, mainly when hitting whoops and such. The spark plug has plenty of black soot on it. Air filter looks good. Boots look okay. I've seen lots of different suggestions here, but can anyone narrow it down some?
Thanx.

I pulled the carbs to have a look at the float setting. But before I got that far, I found that the starter/choke plunger wouldn't come out like it's suppossed to. Looks like water got past the cable and into the spring area. It corroded enough to eat up the spring some and prevent the plunger from moving freely. If the plunger was off the seat a little, it would explain the rich looking plug. Also, the floats were set to allow a way high fuel level. I'm waiting on a new plunger & spring. Should be in this week.

I am sure you figured it out already. I was going to tell you this was the most likely culprit. KNOWSALOT posted about this issue and the part numbers for the cables too. Yamaha has a service bulletin. It also includes Kodiaks.
I bought the cable but not the other parts. I cleaned the plunger up really well and bought another spring from the hardware store (had to cut a few coils from it though). All is well now.

He said that the 2003 were coming out next week and he said that he wasn't sure if they were going to make the banshee in 2003
