I just got my August 2002 Dirt Wheels and noticed that on page 188, they describe how to put a grease zerk in a Blaster's rear axle carrier.

My question is: Do you simply drill right into the rear of the swingarm housing and install this grease zerk while the ATV is completely assembled, or do you take the axle off the swingarm and then install it on the part (tube) that holds the bearings?

If you drill right into the swingarm housing, do you have to remove the axle or just drill into it while it is still on the swingarm?

Please help????

I would have to say that you would have to take the axle and such out. By drilling it together you would have metal shavings in the carrier and that wouldnt be good for the bearings. So i would say take it all apart drill it out then clean out the shavings then put it back together.

If you use a magnetized drill bit (alot are) and you clean it often while drilling the housing you would probably be ok leaving everything together but then again you have to tap the carrier out also to accept the zirk, harder to do without shavings.

When you do put the grease in go very slow or you can blow the seals and bearings out of the carrier.

So you do actually put the grease zerk in the rear of the swingarm where the axle goes through it?

I thought maybe you are suppossed to disassemble the rear of the swingarm, take the axle out and the bearing carrier that you drill into is still on the axle. In other words, do you drill into the swingarm just above the axle or do you take the axle out to access the bearing carrier?

Yes, there are photos. But they are using an aftermarket bearing carrier. That is why I am asking if there is a separate bearing carrier inside the rear of the swingarm, or is the rear of the swingarm the bearing carrier? And if it is, is this where you install the grease zerk?

Yes there is a bearing carrier in the swing arm. thats where you need to have the zerk installed.

I noticed that the new Blasters also get disc brakes on the front for '03 and new plastic. Looks better now with the improvements.

I would say to take the axle out as mentioned earlier. Thsoe shavings will wreak havoc with your bearings otherwise.
