Banshee top end question?
#1
I'm posting this for a buddy. He's got a 2000 Banshee with the typical mods; pipes, reeds, boost bottle. And he'd like to know how often he should do a top end. His bike seems to be running perfect but he'd rather do it now in the off season than have it grenade during dune season. Any help here would be appreciated.

Everybody that runs a 2 stroke should own a compression guage. Have him do a compression check and see how close to stock he is. Stock compression is 130 PSI at sea level and you deduct 6 PSI per 1000 feet above that. Not all gauges will read the same and the length of the hose can also have an impact. The important thing is that the compression be checked every so often to keep tabs on the top end wear.

I am going to start pulling both of my apart every year. I put a lot of hours on them in rough conditions. The race track is very dusty and I also ride a lot on sandbars and tight trails. The way I see it, I can spend $200 on each each year, or I can chance it and break a skirt off and have to split my cases and chance messing up my crank.
Wyoduner, a couple of weeks ago we were talking about shifter problems. Someone mentioned the adjuster screw that limits the amount of movement the shift can have. I broke the screw off while riding this weekend. I called some mechanics and they said this is typical, and it could have been bent and caused my shifting problems. I am now replacing the screw in both of my banshees. Dealer cost on each is $3.07. You must take the foot peg, clutch cover, clutch basket, and all apart to get to it. If you do this, I recommend modifying your star or buying one from Cascade. Also, stick a set of YZ490 clutch springs in.

Alky, thanks for the info on the adjuster screw. I took out some clutch freeplay and put int he Bel Ray Gearsaver oil and it didn't help the problem. The bummer is that I have been so busy that I really can't find the time to dig into this - it's not that bad but shows up when I least want it to like when drag racing. I have never taken the clutch basket off, how hard is that to do. I've had that side down far enough to replace the water pump impeller; I guess a couple more steps and I am there???

Raptoraz, is there some info you feel you're not getting since you put that back to the top. If so, speak up and we'll tell you. The posts people made answered your question.

I appreciate your comments WyoDuner. I moved this back up to the top to get more peoples opinions on how often a top end should be done. Some people say it should be done once a season, like as a maintenance item, and others say it should be done only when needed. I just wanted to give my buddy as much information and opinions as possible.
Thank's,
RAPTORAZ
