Help, Warrior Bogging
#1
Hi,
All of a sudden my Warrior has been cutting out. We ride at the dunes at Spinreel in Oregon, and when I full throttle in 3rd and 4th it cuts out. When I am at home, in the valley it does not seem to do it. We have changed the plugs, the oil, etc. and it has not helped. It just started doing it so don't think it would be the jetting. I thought possibly the altitude could be doing it so thought maybe I would take a few plates out. (White brothers E series pipe) Please any suggestions would be great. THANKS

Without knowing the elev at Eugene, I would guess it is somewhat above that of the dunes, which is sea level, which requires fatter main jetting.
Correcting a lean air/fuel mix in the carburetor by adjusting the air flow of the silencer seems to me a back door approach to the problem. The real solution is to first do a test ride and plug read the next time you visit the dunes. That will tell you what degree of lean you have and then correcting it with the appropriate main jet. possibly one or two sizes fatter that you run at home. After another test/plug read, you'll know just what you need to do in terms of jetting thereafter at the dunes or other sea level area.

Okay, so what would pulling out the choke actually do? Also, Eugene is at sea level, and I know the dunes are actually probably a lot higher. The funny thing is, it just started doing it. Also, we never did the pilots, just the mains. Would that help if we did the pilots? The guy down at Yamaha said that the Warrior's sweet spot for the main jets is 147.5, have you heard that? Thanks again, you guys on here are just so cool.

Having never been to the dunes and only seeing pics of them right at the ocean, I assumed they had to be at sea level. In any case what you need to do, as I said above, is to stop just guessing about the jetting & do a test ride/plug check to see what the engine is telling you it wants. No, the pilot jet shouldn't affect the part of the band you mention; it operates in the idle to 1/4 throttle range.
You cannot rely on what someone else tells you is the right jetting for your bike with your modifications.
If you have a stock main jet now, it is a 145 and almost certainly lean with the E series and 18 discs. I'd do the test before riding it any more to prevent severe engine damage.
As the old Nike commercial used to say, "Just do it!"

I will definitly try that, thanks. The jetting is 170 right now, how much more would you go if that is the problem? Also, you are probably right about the Dunes. They just seem so much higher than the ocean, but it is probably only a couple of hundred feet higher, and truly amazing. When you get out there all you can see is dune after dune after dune, with the ocean one way and forest the other way.
Thanks again,
Thanks again,

a 170 main is pretty big for a warrior. sounds like you've had some engine or air box mods done at some time. start with a new plug and ride for a while. then remove it and tell us what it looks like. for example white and clean looking or black , sooty or wet.

Okay, I had put in a new plug last time I went riding and just went and checked it. It is black and oily. Doesn't that mean that I am getting to much gas? Okay I am new at this, so not sure. If that is the case do I need to change my jetting to a smaller jet? Also, am still wondering why this would happen all of a sudden when I have been riding it this way for almost a year. Guess that does not matter, I just need to get my bike back running great for next weekend, so I can keep up with all those damn Raptor boys I ride with

black and oily sounds sounds like too rich or some wear on your rings ,which can happen if you ride pretty hard for that length of time. get a compression check and see how that comes out. have you noticed any smoke out of your pipe ?
