What's faster turbo or big bore kits (Raptor)???
#5
On your questions about turbo, in the May 02 edition of Dirt wheels(i know most of you are not liking this magazine anymore, but it was pre the Z plague), they did test two quads that had turbo. One was the 400ex and the other was the Raptor. They said it works well for either machine since the engines are not highly stressed and it is relativley easy to doubly the stock horsepower with turbocharging on these two models and still maintain good reliability. When they dynoed both the machines the Raptor was rated at a 34 stock and went up to 70.2 with the turbo! The 400ex was rated at 23.9 and with turbo it jumped to 51.8. Also this was done with a regular high octane fuel not racing. They did state that it is better by far than doing any big bore, cam mod, head porting, or any other performance mods all thrown togther(says the man that makes these kits) They said the only problem was that with the turbocharged, was that it was hard to keep the front ends down(it doenst seems like a problem to me with that much power!). The price though was 4400 for the intercooler-equipped version and 3900 the basic system. These kits though from what the article says come with everything needed.

On the other hand if you want a big bore i would talk to One of the big bore companys(Trinity Racing, or Powerroll)
The turbo kit seems really cool let us know what you want to do.

I saw the pictures of the turbo kit installed on the Raptor in the DW Mag and my only real concern would be the breather coming out of the right rear fender...IN THE FRONT. That would be fine if all you did was ride in the desert (no offence Californian's....I envy you) but around here splashing around I can't imagine a shot of water would do that turbo unit any good at all.

A little water wouldn't be bad at all. In fact many racers that run turbos use water injection kits to help cool the charge and prevent dreaded detonation that forced induction engines are so susceptable to. Now a lot of water would do the same to a turbo engine as a naturally aspirated engine...hydro lock.

there is a "Mr Turbo" or some generic type name kit for a raptor on EBay, the buy it now is $3200. but the aerodyne kit bluerules mentioned for $3500 would sound like the way to go Aerodyne knows their stuff. One downside to turbos are they can be very finiky and have problems loading up at idle, at least this is the experiences I had with them on snowmobiles. Best bang for your buck would be the turbo...hands down, provided you get it tuned right
