When I adjusted the valves on my warrior the other day I could not get the dot on the timing sproket and the do on the case to line up when the T was lined up with the mark in the timing window. I turned the piston over about 6 or 7 times and the if I had the T lined up in the window the dots were off about 3/8". If I lined the dots up the T was off about 3/8", what gives? The quad runs great but the valves were a little noise (the warrior seams to always be a little noise) so I thought I would double check them sence it had been about 5 months. Should I just line up the T in the window and set the valves or line up the dots? Or should the line up perfectly?

I've had this happen to me on all kinds of engines while rebuilding them. Where you can never get the timing EXACTLY right. You either have to advance it or retard it. No big deal. Just line up the T mark with the line on the case and adjust the valves. If everythings really tight when you do that rotate your crank just a little bit so you can move both rocker arms freely. Remember they'll only move just a little little bit unless they're tight. From there adjust your valves. It's no big deal so long as there's no pressure on the rocker arms from the cam lobes.

To put it simply turn the engine over untill you know it's on the compression stroke and you can move both the rocker arms at the same time. Then adjust your valves. Sounds to me like your timing is already a little advanced or retarted (depending on what way the marks are off)

Cool, with the T lined up the dot on the sprocket is ahead of the dot on the case by about 3/8".

That needs to be lined up with the 'F' not the 'T'. That is probaly your problem.

I went by the clyners manual but could not remember which while typing, so if it was the F then thats what I lined up. In either case the dots did not line up perfectly.

Hurycne, I have to disagree with your statement. I recently tore into my warrior and the manual specifically noted timing the cam to the "T" Timing mark. The "F" mark is for checking the firing of the plug with a timing light.

2001atv, there is some play in the chain that would probably account for 3/8 play. The manual stated to rotate the engine/chain clockwise best I remember to take up slack in the chain and not let it rotate back. If the machine is running good chances are you have it okay. To much out and you would have damaged valves. 1 tooth retarded and you probably would notice substantial power loss, one tooth high and it probably would ping badly and not idle down. As far as adjusting the valves I don't even remove the timing cover, just the valve covers and rotate the motor over little bits at a time until finding 0 lash and then adjust. Usually just a little bit after the valve closes.

Hope this helps.

Damn, guys I apologize. I misunderstood 2001atv's original. I thought he had the timing chain off and was questioning how to time it again. You were just adjusting the valves. In that case Hurycne the F mark might be a good place to adjust the valves. They may be 0 lash.
