My 01 tranny crapped out on me today. I wish it had not happened but it did. After thinking about it for a few minutes i came up with a couble of options. Rebuilt the 01 tranny and bore the case to a 720 or 770 or buy a new 03 raptor and swap the top-ends and repair the 01 tranny and sell it. I am hard on my quad, always maintained it and never really just trashed on it. I knew my tranny would go sooner or later, i was just hopping later.

Regarding your tranny...just one idea.
Did you back out your reverse cable? If you back it out so that it won't engage and then turn it in so that it barely engages when you twist the **** then you won't grenade your tranny. My understanding from a Yamaha mechanic is if you are downshifting from third to second, you can actualy engage your reverse gear and trash your tranny if you haven't backed the reverse cable out. Somehow, reverse and second are the same (or close)...how the specifics work I don't know but ask your Yamaha dealer. I did as he recommended and I've never had shifting or tranny problems ('01 raptor) that some have spoke of...knock on wood. I've heard this from a few others so I don't think it is a myth...just a thought.

No, a 03-ds 760 on nitromethane would be a great replacement!

14,

Sorry to here about your tranny man, I know the down-time is going to kill you!!!(probably why your thinking of a 03')he he.

ANyways dont bother with buying a new RAPPY, Your quad looks great and you are probably putting out to much power for the 03'tranny anyways, and will trash that one in a few months. Just put some fortin gears in the "Superchickin",then have them backcut so when you go the the next-level you wont have to worry about the tranny. Good luck!!!!

Keep the 01 upgrade to the 02 tranny about $400 if you know what you are doing and dont have to pay a shop to do the upgrade it will cost ya less in the long run. If you are going to split the cases a stronger rod would be a good idea. If those are your displacement options 771 with a healthy shot of n.o.s should be just right.
