Raptor valve spring setup.
#1
Okay guys a million questions and I hope a few good answers will come out.
I'm fitting up a Hotcams stg 1 camshaft, i want a wide power spread plus more over rev, engine is an other wise "stock" 2002 (dynojet/proflow and HMF slip-on).
I see alot of comments that the Rappys stock valve springs are on the wimpy side, 30lbs seat pressure seems bugger all to me.
Is shimming up the stockers to get more seat pressure a viable alternative ? do they have enough travel so that they don't coil bind. What is the stock spring rate and installed spring preload. I'm sure you hotrod rappy engine guru's have sorted through all this stuff.
Sure I can pay the bucks for a set of kibblewhites but it seems overkill or is it ? whilst a quality part $120 clams is steep (that's $300 NZ weenie dollars......)
I don't hear to many good things about R&D springs ?
Is there some other Yamaha springs , YZF maybe, that can be fitted up ?
As with any valve train setup alot of gains can be made with attention to detail and correct setup with eom parts, time and patients I have, but a limited cash flow budget for mods.
Waitin patiently to hear from ya all...........

Blow the dust out of your wallet and buy the springs or I'll be the first to say "I told you so" when your next post is for damaged valve train. The cost of the springs is so small in the grand scheme of your machine. Save yourself the headaches and save a little extra for the right parts for the job. If you do hurry I'm sure there will be a friendly Honda willing to pull you back to camp. Good luck and If you do decide to go with a cheap mod and it works durably let me know and Ill eat crow...later

<< RAPTORJAY...get out your knife and fork. I'm running the 696/697 webcam..which they recommend you run aftermarket valve springs with. 100% perfect. >>
I am running stock value spring with WB all around cam. No probo there....
RCR, Des,
I will not say it will happen on every Rap, but I have seen and experienced it with my own Rap. Yes, I was using the 696 cam and the stage1 cam is fairly comparible. Others have had the seal and valve issues too and some builders will warn you as to what can or might happen.
Myself, I just wanted to help others to understand what "can" happen and what I and others have experienced, not scare them into spending money on uneeded parts.
If you can or feel you can get away without the heavier springs, great! Spend that extra cash on something else, but if something does happen, well?
Spend a little extra today and it could prevent you from having to spend alot later.
