Raptor vs Z and EX
#2
Raptor has more power than Z, which has more power than the EX.
Handling is kind of a toss up with the 400's.
2001 Raptors are loosin trannys left and right, avoid a 01' Raptor.
02' Raptors are reliable.
The Z's are proving reliable. (the motor IS reliable, for sure.. came out of the DRZ bikes)
The EX's are rock solid reliable.
EX's are cheap now, but air cooled and no reverse. (yet NO lighter than the Z)
Go sit on them, and take your pick.
If you want a great bike, for less $, EX.
You willing to spend a little more money for everything the EX does, plus liquid cooling and reverse? Get the Z.
You want everything the Z does, plus some more power, (handling not quite as good, maybe more tippy stock?) plus a few more $, get the Raptor.
RUN A SEARCH. This has been BEAT TO DEATH.
You will have more info than you have time to read if you run a forum search.

Update on 2001 Raptor, Was expecting major problems with my tranny, being it is the infamous 01 Raptor. Was planning major engine mods after my inferior gears exploded (and I do use my reverse). Actually rode harder than mechanically possible, and to my dismay, nothing. I guess I'll just have to wait. I guess it all comes down to personal preferance. I didn't like the new Z because I was never a Suzuki lover but I kinda like the new Kaw 400 (yes, I know it's the same machine). I know I could never replace the extra thump I get from my Raptor. That said, for me I wouldn't trade it for anything. Anyway, good luck on your pick but either way, welcome aboard, your going to love it!!

Yes Sonic, I know what you mean.
I have two buddies (Brothers) who both have 01' Raptors. They are street legal (AZ) and are ridden to their riding spots every day. Once there... they are ridden, HARD.
They have logged MANY thousands of miles on them (yes thousands... they do 100 mile street trips through mountains often) and they are both good solid machines.

as far as the tippy thing, the rap is really good usually. hard corners and when up in the air it can get a little top heavy. its a bit taller than the 400's but it doesnt seem to be wide enough, stock that is.
if you want to beat your friends, and make some enemies, go with the 660. all are great quads though. have fun.

If your going to ride dunes, get the raptor, it has more torque. You wont have to keep the rpm's up all the time like with the ex and z. Also be warned that the factory still hasn't sent a recall on the z's bending prone axle. The z and ex are still the same price, 5699, but I have seen dealers offering 1000 off on the ex lately, due to the fact that the ex isn't selling like it used to. All in all, the 3 bikes are very fun, but the raptor will give you room to grow with your comfort of speed increses.
