Default Raptor cam and Piston Question?

I just installed a Stage 1 cam and 11-1 Piston pro-flow Foam kit no lid.

I currently have 2 issues!

1. The starter seems to struggle sometimes when starting. Mechanic I had do
the install is really good, and he did put the decompression unit in and was
sure that it was operating properly as he said he has done quite a few of
these. He also said the starter dragging some is normal with the high comp
piston and told me I should try to always start in nuetral. I was just
wondering if this should be expected and is there anything that can correct this.

2. Now about jetting! I am maybe 300' max elevation. I am running a white
brothers R4 full pipe, pro-flow kit no lid and Dyno Jets 148-150 needle clip
3rd position. The main jetting seems fine, when I am driving and jump on
it, it responds well and power seems great from bottom to top, the problem I
am having is when I am going fast then I back off and slow down it wants to
stall. If started it will idle fine it only seems to want to die when I am
going along then slow down. I still have stock pilots 22.5 and the air fuel
is 3 turns out. What I think is the problem is I need larger pilots, like
the 27.5's do you guys have any possible suggestions?

Default Raptor cam and Piston Question?

RaptorRider660R.......... You are running almost my exact set up!! I have the 12.1 piston WITHOUT the decompression mech. sometime's I have to tap the starter then hit it again & it will fire right up. Now your jetting I am at 2000ft & I am running slightly smaller mains, A/S 2.5 turns out, needle 3rd from top, and modified pilot jet's(drilled by the shop that did my cam, piston, port job) so I don't know the exact size. My guess- try the larger pilots and turn your screws 2.5 turn's out. BTW are you running an airbox lid?? Hope this help's.

Will having no decompression release be harder on your one-way starter bearing, and cause it to go out sooner?

Default Raptor cam and Piston Question?

I run 25's for my Pilot circuit, mine is running very well. My elevation is 880'.

11:1 J.E. piston w/ Web Cam.............stock jets & needles.

Mine had a sputter when I was trying to set up for a jump. It didn't want to smooth out, full throttle runs were great, it just didn't like to go slow. At that time I was in the 5th. clip position on my needles. I went to the 4th. and it cured it for me. Perhaps yours is starving out on deceleration. You might want to try the 4th. clip position.

What does your head pipe look like?? When I had my stock pilots in mine looked like a glowing neon sign!! The 25's cured that as well.

The more you ride and get your engine broke in it will turn over better. Mine improved a bunch.

Good luck.

Default Raptor cam and Piston Question?

When I installed my Stage I Hotcam I reused the decompression release as per the instructions. When combined with the 11:1 piston I have not had any trouble with the starter. I suppose it may stress it more than the stock piston but time will tell. Instead of going bigger on the pilots try turning out the fuel screws 1/4-1/2 turn each, especially with the colder weather. If the temp dropped 30 degrees or more it is also time for a lower clip position as well. Good luck!

Default Raptor cam and Piston Question?

The mechanic who did the install said the decomp mech was working fine, he has installed quite a few and races himself as do 5 other guys out of his shop. I can only go by his word. But to me it also sounds like the decomp mech is the cause of the problem. It does not happen everytime, When I got home tonight I started it 3 or 4 times and it started fine each time. I'll see how it goes as it breaks in. It has never not started, just a few times it feels like a dead battery for just a split second then it turns right over.

Bartlett, The main jetting feels good, damn good no hesitation runs real smooth, when you say go up to 160-165 do you mean stock jets? The jets I have now are the Dynojet jets with the dynojet needle. Or do you mean get the larger dynojet jets.

I was looking at Sparks website and they recommend dynojet 148-150 with 27.5 pilots with no airbox lid. Don't know if that is what they would recommend with a cam and Piston.
