Raptor Oil Leak.

Raptor Oil Leak.
Dumont was cool this weekend ( 1st,2nd,3rd of nov). There was a lot of people out there, with some nice trucks sandrails, and of course quads. But i had a little problem with my raptor. Last time i rode i checked the oil and it was down to the Empty line so i filled it up to just a hair above the Full line. Then on this trip after i took a ride on it I decided i better check it because there was oil dripping down from below my water pump on the right side of my quad. When i checked it the oil was about and inch or two above the full line on the oil stick. We thought that maybe it was leaking thru a blow off valve or something. So we drained some oil out of it until it was back down to the full line. Cleaned the oil off and let it sit a few minutes. When i started it up again it kept leaking. So then we thought maybe i had blown a gasket down there from overfilling the oil. I decided i would keep riding it and check it a few times thru each ride because we had plenty of oil to keep filling it. On the first ride we took after doing all of that i checked the oil and it was down to the empty line so i babied it back to camp. When i got back i checked it and it said it was full. And yes i always checked it on even surfaces. Does anyone know why the oil would show full sometimes and empty other times? Could i have something wrong with my oil pump? Any advice would help. i would really like to be able to fix it myself and not have to wase money at a shop. Thanks for any advice.

Raptor Oil Leak.
I had the same problem at Glamis last weekend. I didn't have a leak, but oil level would be down in the morning and back up in the afternoon. I have not had any problems with it sumping up in the past, so I came to the conclusion that it was the fact that it was cold compared to what it has been seing here in Phoenix. What seemes to take care of it was starting it and letting it warm up before checking the oil. When I did it by the book, I had no problems getting a correct reading. It is amazing how much the level changes between cold and warmed up. Like you, I over filled it.

There is a specific sequence to checking oil on a dry sump system.
From the Raptor service manual.
CHECKING THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL
1.Place the machine on a level surface.
2.Start the engine, warm it up until the engine
oil has reached a normal temperature of
60 ‹C (140 ‹F), let it continue to idle for ten
seconds, and then turn the engine off.
NOTE:
To achieve the proper engine oil temperature
for an accurate oil level reading, the engine
must have first completely cooled down, and
then warmed up again for several minutes to
normal operating temperature.
3.Check:
Engine oil level
Oil level should be between the minimum
level mark a and the maximum level mark
b .
Low oil level ¨Add oil to the proper level.
NOTE:
Wait a few minutes until the oil settles before
inspecting the oil level.
Do not screw the dipstick 1 in when inspect-ing
the oil level.
CAUTION:
Do not add any chemical additives.
Engine oil also lubricates the clutch and
additives could cause clutch slippage.
Do not allow foreign material to enter the
crankcase.
4.Start the engine and let it warm up for sev-eral
minutes.
5.Stop the engine and inspect the oil level
again.
NOTE:
Wait a few minutes until the oil settles before
inspecting the oil level.
Failure to follow the directions can give a false reading.
I know as I did it my self. I thought the oil was low & added some & the next time I checked it overflowed from the tank!!

Raptor Oil Leak.
Dunaholic,
I went out and looked at mine and if you have taken out a gasket around the water pump I am not sure why that would be the one to go, but it wouldn't be to hard to replace that gasket.
Go to Rivayamaha parts finder and then hit there original parts finder link. You can look and see which gasket could be the problem.
Here is the oil amounts for myself when I do the change and it is close to what Yamaha calls for when total dry and it is above the full mark when I check it.
Chet Raptor's 2 qts, 12 oz. when changing filter add 4 oz.
Yamaha calls for, periodic oil change 2.0 qt.
with oil filter 2.07 qt.
total amount 2.43 qt.
I am putting in the amount that is called for when the motor is total dry.
Most of the time I put a pan under it and let it drip all night and finish it the next day.

Raptor Oil Leak.
THank you for all the help everyone. I took the crankcase apart yesterday and resealed it and so far there is no oil leaking and i have been checking the oil the correct way and it seems to be working. I am taking it to dumont next saturday(the 16th of nov.) and that is where i will really be able to tell if i fixed it.
